  • Robbo on Roosters Radio

    different tact taken by Robbo in this interview, conceded this was a rebuilding year and that we are unlikely to win the premiership (certainly not a revelation), focused on getting the right support structures around our youngsters who are coming into first grade.

    also mentioned that SST almost didn't play against the Cowboys as he wasn't able to eat for 30hrs before the game, certainly a massive effort by SST to play 80 minutes when crook.

    Pretty candid interview IMO

    Some key points for me were;

    "...Between him (SKD) and SST, the two guys are by far been our best, it hasn't been a great start by us,
    so there's not too many guys punting for that position..."

    On the 15-35min window against the Cowboys;

    "...we didn't compete enough... on the end of kicks (chasers), kicking game, scrapping..."

    On Nikorima/Hastings;

    "...you don't want to leave them to hang out to dry... we've got to make sure we are supporting them with the right senior players and the right senior players around them to develop their game. It's not much use getting beaten 40-0 every week, so we do need to select and cover these guys whilst they're growing and the best way to do that is managing it well from week to week... we want them out there but with some strong senior players around them..."

    On our attack;

    "...We are not earning the right to play laterally..."
    "The only time you start at the top is when you are digging a hole."

      That last point is so relevant. The pigs need to go forward. I don't care if we do 5 hit ups. Just go forward and hold the ball. Win the middle and then maybe use the space created. We need to follow the cronulla blueprint. When down on skill and experience you hold the ball, slow down the game and niggle and bash the opposition.

        Where Im at with it is that I cant see the Roosters winning any games until Pearce is back in the halves so I wouldn't be worried about attack I would just solely concentrate on defence so that we are not getting flogged. Im happy to lose 22-6 or 24-10 or 18-12 so long as they commit to defence. Once they get the D right then attack follows.

                The question needs to be asked as to why this needed to be a rebuilding year when we still had the best roster in the comp.

                I suspect anything less than top 4 next year and Robbo will be shown the door.

                  Defense, yardage and completions. There's much more of course, especially with certain individuals but that'll do me.

                      Good interview. Andrew Johns said he was almost jealous that Robbo was always so calm, always the same.

                      Robbo hasn't given up on this year, he's just saying that the path to (hopeful) success will be different.

                        I still can't believe that some on here still want 2013 results with the 2016 playing roster. They must be bandwagon type fans new to following the game who don't understand the highs and lows of following a sporting team as they have not supported the club through the actual lows. Since when is having a rebuilding year such a bad negative thing, and why would someone think it should result in a coach having their employment terminated? Where do you think the next crop of players come from? Very few new recruits are world beaters in their debut year. It took me all of last weekend scratching my head trying to remember the name of the next Peter Sterling at Parra. It was Tim Smith and look how he ended up. I think so much recent success has gone to people's heads and I'm not talking about players or coaches It's unrealistic to think we will be at the very top yet again this year. If we manage to make it as far as the top 6, I'll be pleased with that effort because I don't live in fantasy land.

                        Now excuse me as I must go clean before the Easter Bunny comes on Sunday.

                          So true RWB. RL and many other codes are cyclical. You just have to make the most of it when you're on the up because when/if retirements, player/coach transfers, long term injuries etc hit then the slide occurs. We're experiencing that drop now but just how well a team begins their recovery and ascendancy relies on astute management.

                            Nicely put.

                            The same people who carry on with hamfisted calls to sack players and the coach after 2 losses.
