JACKSON Hastings has vowed to revive the Roosters horrendous goalkicking record, conceding: “It’s cost us two games already”.
Currently last, winless and enduring the worst start to any Roosters season ever, the struggling Chooks also boast the ugliest conversion rate of any team in the NRL.
According to Fox Sports Statistics, the Tricolours have kicked at a disastrous 38.46 per cent - or less than half the accuracy of the top seven sides.
Already the club has trialled three different players, unsuccessfully, in the kicking role.
Hastings has kicked one of two attempts, fullback Latrell Mitchell three of eight and powerhouse forward Sio Siua Taukeiaho one of three.
Quizzed on the worrying numbers, Hastings told The Daily Telegraph this week: “I want to own the goalkicking here at the Roosters.
“Starting the year, I’ve had a couple of niggling injuries which have hampered my practice.
“And while there are a couple of other guys who do want to kick going forward, personally I want to own it.
“So far, we’ve been disappointing. It’s cost us two games.
“So no more excuses, we have to start putting them over”.
Goalkicking has rarely been an issue for the Roosters in recent season, thanks almost exclusively to the superboot of larrikin No.6 James Maloney.
After kicking at 82 per cent in 2015, the playmaker is down slightly since his switch to Cronulla, booting 13 of 17 for a strike rate of 76.5 per cent.
Still, that figure is well above the woeful Roosters, whose record sees daylight between them and the next worst teams -- Wests Tigers (55.56%) and South Sydney (70%).
“Obviously it would be nice if could score a bit closer to the posts,’’ Hastings continued with a grin. “But look, no excuses.
“We know we have to be better.
“Everyone who has had a short so far is working hard. But we have to get them over ... it’s as simple as that.”
Elsewhere, Hastings conceded his side should have iced their round two game against Canberra with a field goal.
“We’ve got a young spine here currently but that’s no excuse,’’ he said. “We should have won that a lot earlier.

“We should have taken the one.
“Myself, Latrell and (five-eighth) Jayden Nikorima, we’ve all put our hand up and said someone should have been able to take that field goal.
“Those last few sets didn’t pan out the way they should’ve.
“For young kids, we learned our lesson. And next time we get ourselves into a situation like that ... well, you won’t see it happen again.”
Currently, Newcastle halfback Trent Hodkinson has kicked all 10 attempts to put his Knights in top spot. North Queensland are next, with skipper Johnathan Thurston firing at a success rate of 88.89 per cent.
Also in equal second are the Gold Coast (88.89%), followed by Parramatta (83.33%), Penrith (82.35%) and Melbourne (81.25%).
