Yeh mate, they are all different. Probably my nerves were severed so initially no pain. A mate of mine had to quit footy after a grade 3 and mine still fcuken hurts especially at night. I only have gotten somewhat better from torturing myself in the gym....lots of lunges and leg extensions plus a bit of soft sand running the squats still hurt once I go above 154 pounds so I take it easy on those. A couple of hours after doing it ....when the pain kicked in, it felt like my leg had been partially sawn off.

I think squatting would aggravate a knee injury, because both feet are locked into position, then once you put more weight on the form starts going out the window because you are locked into the same line.
I never see anyone heavy squatting on a smith machine anymore like the '90s, and alot of leg presses seem to now be gathering dust in most gyms.
Lunges are a way better call.

Lunges are a good initial exercise. Squats are essential though and there is no reason why you can't squat big even after an ACL. Im 40 and still squat for reps what i did as a 25yo, just took 12mths of recovery and patience. You're correct though, squats with a Smith Machine are completely frowned upon these days
