MacDougall cops 10 match ban for spear tackleAugust 23, 2005 - 1:21PM
South Sydney's Luke MacDougall was suspended for 10 NRL matches today when he entered an early guilty plea to a grade five dangerous throw charge.
MacDougall, 23, landed in strife with the judiciary for a lifting tackle on Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night.
His Rabbitohs teammate Ben Walker will miss this weekend's clash with North Queensland at Gosford after pleading guilty to a grade one careless high tackle.
MacDougall would have copped a 14 match ban if he had decided to contest the charge and lost, but an early guilty plea gave him a 25 per cent discount, reducing the sentence to 10 matches.
The Rabbitohs can include two NRL-sanctioned trial games next year in his suspension, meaning he will return to action in round seven of the 2006 competition.
He will still have 83 carry-over points hanging over his head.
"Luke is not a dirty player, however he does have a problem with his tackling technique which is something we will work on during his time off the field," Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said today.
Many commentators - including former Test captain Laurie Daley - believe referee Russell Smith, on advice from the video referee, should have sent off MacDougall for the sickening incident after Minichiello landed on his head.
MacDougall, the younger brother of former Test winger Adam, recently re-signed with the Rabbitohs for another 12 months.
Penrith prop Ben Ross has opted to front the NRL judiciary tomorrow night to fight a grade one contrary conduct charge for pushing referee Shayne Hayne.
Privately NRL officials acknowledge there was no malicious intent from Ross but believe it would set a bad example for youngsters if the Queensland forward was not cited.
Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten pleading guilty to a grade one careless high tackle charge resulting from a hit on Bulldogs pivot Braith Anasta on Friday night.
Payten escaped punishment due to his clean record and is free to play against Melbourne at Olympic Park on Saturday night.
