  • Smart Roosters

Given we are currently a very "dumb" side, it's made me ponder and think about who have been the smartest players to pull on our jersey. That is, players who make the right decision under pressure and knew how and when to gamble to win games for their side.

Sadly, not too many spring to my mind but I've come up with:-

    Beetson
    Peard
Hastings (maybe more a grafter/competitor than smart, but knew how to take the right options)
    Fittler
    T. Carney

I've probably forgotten a few but to be honest I think it's a pretty skinny list.

    Any glaring omissions?

Fairfax to a lesser extent ... he certainly came up with some big plays when we need it.

The smart players are the ones who seem to always have time. They don't panic or get flustered and they make the correct decisions. I think the same concept applies to us people who have real jobs.
When I think of smart players, the smartest that comes to mind is Peter Sterling.

No room for Adam "Options" Hayden, who always took the wrong option.

Clutch is probably the word you're looking for, not Smart.

Toddy Carney was everything but smart.

For the Roosters it would be Fittler for me easily. Next I would go for Adrian Lam..
                ...

We aren't talking academics here, Carney had/has footy smarts.

John Brass springs to mind for us older guys. Bozo was good for the three seasons he played with us too.

I reckon Maloney is in this field too, maybe not as dominant as Fittler but .................

Bunny Reilly, pound for pound, was the smartest defender we had.

Definitely would have Maloney on the list.

                          A real crafty bugger.

Gary Freeman had his moments playing for us in some very dark days. More a crafty niggly bugger but definitely pretty footy smart.
