  • Of the bottom 8........

This is mainly for those doomsayers who think the world is ending because we are second last this year and next year won't be much better. Of course this year has been a disaster but we will bounce back next year in my view.

We are one of 8 teams that will miss the semis this year. Having a look at the other 7 teams that will miss the 8, I would much prefer to be in our position heading into next year with our list of players, coach and club etc than any of those other 7 teams. I believe we stand a much greater chance of moving up into the 8 next year than any of the other clubs that won't make the 8 this year.

But for the doomsayers, take a look at all of the other clubs that will miss the 8 and I am interested to know which one you think you would prefer to be rather than us heading into next season, as things stand now and with the likely relevant squads as they stand now.

Warriors. All they need is a decent coach to really get them firing and with their current team I believe they can beat anyone on their day. Hard to look past Lolohea, Rts, Johnson & Luke as their spine.

And Foran, if he hasn't been banned for life.

The problem is if they ever do get a really decent coach they could win more comps in a row than what St George did. They are taking over the game & whilst a lot of Tongans & Samoans play as well the best ones will continue to play for the Warriors & New Zealand because Tonga & Samoa have got no money.
I think the Roosters, Souths & Parra can all make the 8 next year.

I think tigers, warriors, manly and us should improve, not that it means we will be guaranteed a finals birth though, the teams currently in the 8 won't go backwards to far barring injury. Also parramatta have shown guts in a pretty unstable year to be considered as an improver next year. Dragons, souths and Newcastle are the only teams i wouldn't be putting any faith in.

The jury is still out on whether we can make thw eight next season To do so wewill need to win most of our home games

You have to base them on their current coach, unless that changes. Of course if the Warriors get a decent coach then they will be a force. It's like saying we will have a top team if we had Cameron smith and cooper Cronk.

                I think it will change.

I also think their spine next year will be RTS, Foran, Johnson and Luke with Lolohia if he stays on the bench. That is a test spine and bench utility.

                  It may well change.

But my question for thought wasn't based on hypotheticals about whether certain clubs will be making changes or not. My question was based on the way things stand presently at each club that will miss the 8 this year.

Yes I know. But a fair percentage of clubs who miss the 8 will be making fundamental changes to the way they do things for example coaching recruitment. Historically 2-4 teams who miss the 8 make it the next year. Even when the draw is released it can give some teams a massive advantage for example Canberra this year.

Your question is a good question and very thought provoking.

If things stay the way they are we are better placed than most maybe apart from Parra who would be in the 8 apart from the points deducted and they still have a strong squad next year with Norman back on deck and Arthur obviously a very good coach. I'm a little worried about our front row rotation as it is Evans and Napa haven't aimed up and Moa is well past it assuming now news if he is leaving and things stay the same. Guerra is also a waste of cap and a weakness as Robbo will be picking him in 1sts again next year no doubt.

I am not one of the doomsdayers but.....
Knights - Nothing needs to be said here.
Eels - We don't get one tenth of the assistance the NRL gives them to help them clean up their multiple messes. So they have an advantage over us but I still think we will have a better team than them.
Souffs - You can't tell me they are a better team than us at full strength.
Manly - Rebuilding just like us only they are further behind
Dragons - They are a seriously ordinary team. How did they get close to making the 8.
Warriors - Same old warriors, promise so much but fail time and time again. I would back our team to beat them in any game.

And of those in the 8, when at full strength we are a better team than the Bulldogs, Titans or Tigers. I also suggest that if we had been given the draw the Raiders were and had no long term injuries to our key players or NRL enforced lengthy suspensions, we are a better team than them also. They are on a roll. Winning creates momentum and confidence. A soft draw helps in that process.
