  • Eloni Vunakece

Good news for mine. I like the way he plays. No superstar, but a good honest footballer.

    ROOSTERS GARBO RE-SIGNS

Roosters cult figure Eloni Vunakece has re-signed with the club.

Market Watch can reveal the 29-year-old has signed a two-year-deal which keeps him with the club until at least the end of 2018.

But even more important to his deal is Vunakece will continue his work as a garbage man while juggling football.

The Roosters’ willingness to allow him to work fulltime and play football was a major influence in contract negotiations.

“The garbage still has to be picked up. I’ll keep chipping away at the two,” Vunakece told Market Watch.

“It’s all I know. I’ve always worked so that’s the plan.

“It’ll be tough through the pre-season but I got through it last year so I’ll survive. Robbo knows I don’t shy away from hard work and if I ever miss a session I’ll make it up later. He’s been really supportive like that.”

A Fijian representative, Vunakece only made his NRL debut this year after a decade of chasing his dream.

He finished the year with nine games for the Tricolours and was named prop in the 2016 Intrust Super Premiership NSW Team of the Year.

But heading into this season he admits he was preparing himself for retirement before finally reaching his goal.

“I didn’t really expect to play after this year,” he admitted.

“I didn’t know where things were going to go but to get another opportunity at the Roosters and to get two years is a bonus. I’m still pinching myself looking back on it.

“I think there’s plenty more in me and I guess they do too.”

Hes got something to offer for sure. Happy with this re-sign, thought he was younger than 29 though.

A reliable tradesman type that every team needs.

      Happy to hear this.

A good depth player who showed a lot more ticker and made fewer errors than some of our show ponies last season.

He is barely a bench player. Has no impact, makes little metres and average defender. I'd rather blood Butcher and another young player instead.

But didn't you say the other day Butcher was too small to play first grade ToK?

You cannot seem to make up your mind mate.

One year it's Souffs another year it is us...lol.

I like the garbo. Tries hard and although he is not in our best 17 and honest toiler and good depth player.
            MEt him and seems genuine

I've stated that Butcher will be a superstar but at his current weight of 97kg he will struggle week to week in the NRL. As for discussions on Eloni. He is only a depth player and if we needed a fill in player because of injuries, I would rather blood Butcher for the handful of games in season 17. And what has Souths got to do with this topic?

I just lost a bet with a mate when I said that you could actually write a post that didn't refer to Souffs.

Good depth signing but he shouldn't play much NRL unless we have a few too many injuries.

Souths references are in every third post on this forum, I personally have nothing against Souths or any of the other 13 teams in the NRL. The only team I despise is the Storm.

He wasn't in our best 17 at the start of 2016 season and still managed 9-10 games. Injuries and suspensions give an opportunity to a lot of fringe players over a season. That's why we need guys like Eloni contracted to the Chooks - doesn't cost us much but when given the opportunity will give 100%. Every club needs a Eloni or two on their books to get through a season.

Well Aubbo is only 98kg, and he seems to cope OK. That said, I'm sure Butcher will put on a few kgs yet, and end up around Cords weight in the low hundreds.

I reckon he is a good bloke to have around the club.
He has got the best physique out of any player at the club.

I'm good with this signing. The guy wants to play first grade and has shown his commitment to make team training and work full time. I am always happy to have players in our club who are completely focussed on game day not pay day.
