So you think this is a step backwards from Costin and Jason Taylor?

            An entirely underwhelming appointment.

I may go back to the Storm.

              Who says he can't coach?

He took over at Canberra just after all of their stars of the 90s had left. Considering the calibre of players he had at his disposal Canberra did quite well during his time there.

The Penrith players' reaction to him being sacked is a good indication of what they thought of him.

              Plus he's an Easts junior!

I agree. Petero being gutted that he left was enough to convince me he will be ok.

And remember Gould initially wanted him to stay on but Elliot said no

                  This is interesting.

Is this a sign that Gould may in fact be admitting that his recommendation of Smith was in fact wrong?

His contract ends at the same time as Smith's.

Thanks LR. Long time admirer of the banter on this site. Didn't really want the first post to be that sarcastic, but boy its been a prick of year - one that held so much promise. For what its worth, I think Elliott is a good appointment but the jury's out as to how he'll interact with Smith. So is the life of a Roosters supporter I guess, but it's why we all keep coming back.

Head coach has lost every GF he's gotten to and the new assistant coach has lost every semi final he's got to...

Maybe I'll go with 2 negatives make a positive...

Fark me...I just can't comprehend how our side improved so much last year to make the GF and this year has gone backwards so far...

He may not have been a capable enough head coach, but that does not me he doesn't have what it takes to be a good assistant. Elliot's good at man-management which could be what our club needs. Some of our players are quite young and would maybe appreciate his style alongside Smith disciplinarian persona.

Our clubs not in a happy place right now. I don't mind this appointment considering I doubt it could make us any worse than what we are.

                          Off-field distractions and interruptions perhaps?

I think we just plain over achived last year. We won a lot of close games, a fair few in the dying momens. We had next to no injuries and a good slice of luck. This year, luck has deserted us and the inuries are proving too hard a mountain to climb.

Happy with his appointment. He has been coaching first grade for a long time, so he must have some worthwhile skills to bring.

I hate worse that the head coach admitted he was surprised he could coach last year and is happy he remembered he cant this year

Elliot is a Brain acolyte and what will he add other than "good bloke"?

Didn't Penrith finish 2nd last year? Is Cleary's record better?
I think Elliot has a lot to offer as an assistant or main coach.
