  • The Bomb

I used to be a really big fan of the bomb on the last. It was a great defensive play and gave us great field position in that 2013-2015 golden era.

    Now I am over it.

In those days it was coming down ten meters out with lots of chasers.

Now it comes down 20 or 30 metres out while they amble down to field.

    It's totally predictable.

    The opposition trains for it.

    Nobody ever drops one.

It has become a soft handover of possession.

The game management when Pearce went to the bomb at the end of that game yesterday killed me. Put the bloody ball out. There was no benefit to kicking a bomb that almost went out on the full.

Do the bomb sometimes but for god's sake come up with something else.

Pearce's bomb at the end was crazy. They're a dangerous play as they can lead to an opposition breakaway; as we saw.

It was the last thing we needed with 3 minutes left and he should have put the ball out for a scrum to set the defensive line.

Aa for the boring bomb play itself I just think we're lacking in creativity. We look to me like we're becoming an overly structured side.

That approach worked fine for Souffs in 2014 when they were receiving 8-10 penalties a game for their attacking opportunities.

But when you're receiving 1 or 2 most games - looool - I think you need to look to offer more in attack.

This is where we are bad and have been shown up
Our halves always get smashed .Most teams will fudge the 10 shut down our halves and slow up out attack and yes to do this wonderfully. This was apparent against The Joint venture and The Jake Demusks yesterday.
You have to react to that and the best way is to set the side and the back line deeper.
I was screaming for this in the second half we were just to shallow and too flat to move the ball around decently .
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe

I have no issues with the bomb, the problem is Pearce's delivery of the bomb..Its so ineffective and predictable

There are somethings you can blame a player and there are something's a coach is to blame. All year Pearce has been delivering bombs on the last that have no impact. They go up and defenders have little trouble catching it. Yesterday I don't know if the bombs went too far or our players lacked any effort in chasing them. It's a very low percentage play But I can't blame Pearce because it keeps happening every week. When does the coach and his assistants realise that it's not working? There are other options on the 5th but we rarely use.

I think we would be better off just kicking the ball into touch when we are kicking from the 40m line, stops the game and gives the guys a breather and sets the defensive line,

Absolutely nothing wrong with the bomb by Pearce on the last we had them pinned in a corner with 3 to go 10 out from there line. Tupou should have caught it and taken the tackle not batted it back like that,SKDs efforts after that defy any sort of common sense or game awareness whatsoever. My mind is still boggling as to what made him think it was a good idea to dive full stretch and flick the ball back into play as it was about to roll over the touchline. This will only rate as NO 2 in the dumbest plays this year, due to that Brisbane player having a mortgage on the dumbest play after picking the ball up from the drop out after it hadnt travelled 10

The bomb was the right play. It was also probably right for Toups to contest it and try to put the game beyond a field goal to level it up.
The dumber play was Tetevano flopping in to give them the penalty. The were still on their 30M on first tackle.

That was good. I think Eastwood's kick last week is up there.

If 20's count then the Worriers player who yesterday got a penalty then tapped the ball before kicking it out rates very highly.

My issue isn't the bomb tactic themselves. It is the lack of chasers. Our outside backs don't bust out of a trot and never care about putting pressure on the receiver. Look at the warriors game and you will see an instance where a bomb was put up in the second half and Cordner (who was magnificent and busts a gut on every play) was chasing harder than skd (who hardly has to do a tackle). It is the same with tupou and other outside backs - they don't chase.

This year we seem to be much fitter, and when you are getting on top of a big side like the Warriors, you want the ball in play. That's why we bombed all match, and the Worriers kept kickig for touch.

That said, probably should have put the ball out or gone through the hands on the "SKD set" at the end.

Liam knight giving the ref a gob full while Wyong were in possession led to a penalty to the warriors and the opposition scoring, we don't need him in firsts anytime soon.
