Since the decline of loyalty 10 or more years ago players are making decisions based on respect for the coach and club and the bottom line that is the almighty dollar.
Consider a young player who signs with either a) the roosters or b) the storm for a 1 year contract.
The player backs himself for 1 year to snag a lucrative deal at the end of 12 months.
Option 1. He goes to the roosters. We pay twice what was offered from the storm. He gets 150k. At the end of 12 months his value has decreased as the roosters head to the wooden spoon. He has learned next to nothing from a rookie coach about becoming a better man not just a better football player. He struggles into anonymity with no new deal or gets picked up by say the Broncos and plays on the wing in first grade and blossoms because of the structure off and on the field.
Opion 2. He goes to the Storm for 75k. He emerges a better player but more importantly he becomes a better man. He learns the value of teamwork, responsibility, dealing with anxiety and not to panic under pressure. He is nurtured to understand and embrace his weaknesses. Humility, respect and gratitude are paramount.
He finishes the year as a rising new star and signs with another club for 200k + over 3 years and the club wil receive good service from the player because he has served a worthy apprenticeship.
An apprenticeship he will never serve at the roosters.
We pay overs.
The highly paid players are playing their worst ever football.
The young players dont improve.
The whole cycle repeats year after year.
And the management keep making mistake after mistake.
I have a lot to say about the appoinment of Freddy, but deep down I just feel sorry for the situation that he finds himself in. And Nick wants him to "fall on his sword."
