They did what they should have been doing the entire year.
For some reason, apparently because of a change in the "interpretation of the ruck," which is the biggest myth in rugby league, we changed our style of play - the same style that got us to the Grand Final.
Now, let's say the ruck this year is much slower than last. OK. So how do you give yourself space and scope for the same razzle dazzle football that we enjoyed in 2010? Easy - second phase play. First game since Souffs Round 1 that players have backed themselves to throw an offload, and our attack benefits.
Smith has finally changed something, even if it was just to tell them to go for it.
That is the kind of football this team should be playing - the game reminded me of our early games last year. When you attack, and throw the ball around, you get more and more accustomed to the risks involved, and (like it did for us last year) it eventually clicks. It is just a pity that this year we couldn't have backed ourselves from Round 2, instead of deciding to revert to it so late on. Had we stuck with what worked for us, and not tried to be a team that grinds tea,s down (let's face it, we don't have that ability), we might be clicking by now on a run to the finals.
I'm happy that they won, but it just makes this year all the more disappointing, really.
