  • Roosters trying to re-sign Watson

A SHOCK new contender has emerged in the battle to sign star Roosters utility Connor Watson - the Roosters themselves.

For months, Watson - player of the tournament at this year’s Auckland Nines - has been locked in a two-way battle between Newcastle and the Tigers for next season.

It was taken for granted that Watson would be on the move on the assumption that he would struggle to get a starting spot at the Roosters in 2018 following the signing of Tigers and Blues Origin fullback James Tedesco.

But I’m hearing the Roosters have made a late play to keep Watson - and the talented 21-year-old is also getting cold feet about quitting such a strong club to join a battling one.

My spies tell me Watson has spoken to Trent Robinson in recent days and the Roosters coach is reluctant to lose the classy utility.

I wonder if Robbo views him as an option in the three-quarters or whether he's willing to guarantee him bigger minutes coming off the bench in the lock role he's been coming on in the last few weeks.

I just don't see him staying unless he's guaranteed more playing time.

I want him to stay, he is a great kid, talented footy player who will only get better and better.

He already signed for 2018.... looks like they want to extend and pay him more.

Really like him, but i struggle to see where he fits best at our club. Would be pretty happy if we keep him.

James Hooper now says he's set to sign a 3-yr deal with the Knights.

i dont really trust the reports until the official one, everyone was going on a few weeks about how hes signed for tigers for 500k a year, now hes going to the knights, and rumours about roosters trying to resign him

Completely agree. I just cannot see where he can play in the team the next few years that will give him extended minutes.

As Mr Spock would say (if he was asked) its Logical to retain him as it's a 17 player game- Robbo needs to play him more minutes for sure - next few weeks will tell - will he play fullback or hooker with Flash and Friendly out for 8 weeks and 4 weeks or more respectively - I think he would stay if offers were close- not always about the money - it's if your going to get reasonable game time each week and are in a team that can play finals footy and is a chance of winning the comp- not be shuffled between NRL and NSW Cup as you cannot nail down a spot in the 17 at least for the season.

I just don't get it. He signed a contract to play for the Roosters. If the Roosters need him to play 15 minutes a game then he plays 15 minutes.
Just because a player finds form he wants out of his contract.
Do you ever see a player that has lost form say to the club, look I'm playing bad so I will give you some of my money back. NO F%^#ing way.

Not quite as simple as that as sometimes he hasn't even taken the field or played few minutes and has played NSW Cup as well this season- I think most players would be happy to get adequate game time - sure some will play all 80 minutes always unless injured- but the issue is will he get this adequate game time though- next few weeks will tell whether he's picked as fullback or hooker in whether they want to retain him. He be leaving a strong club to go to clubs that are rebuilding and may not see finals footy for a while or during the duration of the contract he may sign with them - Tigers or Knights- Gussy says it could take Newcastle up to 8 to 10 years to be a force again- capable of winning a comp- ditto Tigers

Yes. I mean I'd put it more nicely, but yes.
If he plays well at the roosters next year his market value will rise - and he might get a contract with a better team that the Knights (or even get to stay at the roosters).

i dont know why people think watson is entitled to play minutes just for the sake of playing minutes you make decisions based on the way the game is unfolding not based on predetermined minutes

If so they must be releasing him from his last year of his contract (2018) - Clubs always do this - oh the player has a better offer and we wont stand in the players way -some will say make them play out the contract but if their head isn't in it I suppose allow the release - disappointing if true- looks like its true though- 500k a year 3 seasons- would not even get half that at the Chooks even with an upgrade
