  • Sydney Sports Ground

Growing up in NSW country it was such a wonderful experience to come down for 2 weeks in the school holidays and get in an Easts home and an away game. I so loved teh Sydney Sports Ground but having no mobile pones or decent camera's at the time means i have little to refelct on except memories. For those that never experienced it is a shame as it was a brilliant place that was full of passion.

I cant find many pics or coverage on line except that freakish try against Manly in 82 on youtube. Does anyone have any links or pictures?

I remember seeing a Rugby test on Fox a few years ago that was there. Fairfax was playing for the Wallabies.

It also helps the fond memories when the Roosters team that inhabited the Sports Ground was more often than not a great side with names like Beetson, Coote, Fairfax, Brass, Harris, Mayes, Mckean, Saddler, Junee etc. I used to go to every home match between 70 and 86. Ahh the memories. I started going with my dad in 66 but those early days were spent skimming down the grass slopes on cardboard. lol

What about running for the corner post after the full time hooter!
Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

Only ever got to go there once, was too young to remember much though.

Being back at ANZ for the first time in a while I just remembered how much of a ****ing shit place it is to watch footy.

I grabbed the corner post on many occasions. One was an 11-10 win over Manly at the S.C.G in 75.

It makes me sad when I see how far our club has fallen.

Lucky you. I just wish we could watch one last game there. I loved the place but never appreocuated what its was and then bang its gone. I even remember the entrance and ticket windows and the concourse in front of each stand

I remember you could hear the players in the dressing room, and the sound of the massuers. Also the smell of the dencorub and the sound of the players studs on the concrete as they ran out. Remember the Arties Army hoop that the players used to run through? The other strong memory I have is the dry ice which was always in abundance and the first tryscorer ticket sellers who used to make their way around the crowd. I could go on and on.

The bloke in the white lab coat walking around the concourse shouting "peanuts!....get your peanuts...candy coated peanuts!"

Losing your voice each week with Brian and the Turner stand army

The old caravan on the western hill that sold dodgy food

Ripping up newspapers to throw in the air when the chooks scored.

Taking shots at goal after the games till it got dark and you were kicked out

It was especially good for me as Ian Schubert was a teacher at my primary school so it was fun to run onto the field after the game and pat him on the back and say "Seeyah tomorrow sir"

I was there that day when Easts put the ball through about 42 sets of hands to score against Manly.

                    Good memories

                      *The Turner Stand
                      *the wooden seats
*Peanuts, fresh peanuts, in the shell or candy coated
*First two tries in the main game, the East card, $50 to 50c $100 to a dollar.
*As RC mentioned, the smacking sound of the masseurs and the linament smell from the change rooms, the players studs on concrete.
*The players walking in on their own wth their families, and having to walk the concourse in front of the stands during the lower grades
*Watching all 3 games .....U23's, Reserves and Firsts
*A round faced clock that stopped 5 mins from fulltime. No digital countdown

Great memories. Went to plenty of games there and it was nearly all hill. Top atmosphere for games. Even saw the Beach Boys there in the pouring rain.

And Kokora. Wasnt it "in the shell or sugar coated" for the peanuts?

We haven't fallen. I still think we're in far better shape than the dark days of the late 80's and early 90s.

It's still the same in Country and Regional areas. Couldn't print the words of the Dapto song...
It was only this year that I noticed "they" stopped selling doubles at NRL games?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the ground ran east to west..

You never wanted to be running west in the 2nd half as the sun was starting to set..

It is now law that all grounds run north to south..
