HIA has only been around for a few years. He was playing for many years before that where players usually argued to stay out and quite often did.

if someone had followed rugby league for more than 5 mins, they would know this!

It still happens today as well that players argue to stay on the field. The only difference now is that the clubs are accountable for not taking them off thus the players don't get their way anymore. It wasn't the case that long ago.

You are basically asked how you feel then given a few coordination tests. IMO lots of players could jig the test if they wanted to go right out there.

It has been known since the mid 1980's of the dangers of being concussed before the symptoms of a prior concussion had occurred and for at least a decade on the long term impacts of concussions. Just because the NRL resisted taking action until the pressure of the media until recently, does not absolve them or the NRL clubs of any liability.
For a relevant comparison, the NFL recently had to pay out a $1billion settlement to players who have suffered from the symptoms of post concussion syndrome.

I get that Boogie, but if those players were concussed at the time and said they are ok, a court may not accept that defence. If someone is concussed they don;t have much idea what is going on and therefore has the judgment and capacity at that time of an 'unfit person'. That will be the issue, I am old fashioned and hate to see all this litigation creep into the game but it has now.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome is and I think this is why the HIA rules came into effect recently as the NRL and clubs needed to somewhat protect themselves from litigation which arised from incidents from that point on. But for incidents before the HIA rules came into effect it was always going to be pandora's box once the NFL litigation commenced.

NB I have been concussed several times from footy and other sports and accidents. Re the sporting pursuits, I understood that I participated in a contact sport and worst case scenario was that I could be paralysed or even die and for that I was doing it as an amateur as I loved the game. So in some way I don't feel a lot of sympathy for these guys who were fortunate enough to get paid for playing a sport they love as I am sure they knew the risks too. However, I do think something has to be done, re players super etc prospects after a footballers career, their health and mental health, etc. I hope it (the head injuries)doesn't screw your brain. I really dunno but perhaps the issues I face from now is what people used to call old age and maybe it is because parts of the brain decline with age lol.
