The "back ended contract" merely allowed them to bring him in for a couple of seasons heavily underpaid. The NRL saw the other three years of high payments and let it slip through. Then he retires and they can spend that money on other players - having never had to account for Gasnier on the cap at anywhere near his true value.
If it was us I would say it is very smart.
Being them, and the fact he scored the first "try" in the GF (their only first half one) I am pissed off.
