  • Roosters ignored in Cam Smith article

I thought this was pretty funny...

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-0...record/8885716

'Rugby league has changed so much since the 18-year-old half-back from Logan in Brisbane's south debuted in April 2002. That year the Warriors held up the JJ Giltinan Shield as the minor premiers, while the Newcastle Knights were defending their title from 2001.

As a spectator the game was much different. The speed was slower, there was less emphasis on the ruck and the contest seemed to be a lot more open.'

I had to chuckle a little. Yeah things have changed but like... we were still a champion club, and we we are still playing a more open, expansive game that the Drizzle. Just saying...

Smart or lucky that an NRL-owned Storm got stacked with a generation of top-shelf QLD players. Coinciding with this, the refs started allowing tackles that risk serious spine damage and make players feel like their head is being ripped off... giving Smith a lot more time and space to make all his 'smart' plays. Not saying Smith's a plodder, but I get sick of reading about him.

PS - surely 'the accountant' is a reference to the movie? Say what you like, Smith's super fit and could kick any journo's arse in a wrestling match. He's fit like the Hoff, not like the Rock... chicks would still dig his bod over my inferior beer gut.

So the article didn't mention we won the comp in 2002 - meh. The article was about Cam Smith and I might be in the minority on this forum but I admire the bloke for being able to play over 350 matches in the position he plays. That shows great durability and physical endurance. By the time his career is over the total will probably be closer to 400 which is an amazing achievement.

He was always going to get some media this week given he's about to break the record for most NRL games played. And so he should. If any Roosters player had done what Cam Smith has done, I'd expect the same accolades.
Supporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.

Great player no doubt well done on being a great player for so long, one of the greatest RL players ever. im sure.

But if any Rooster(or just about any other player) had done what he did in the minutes immediately after the Alex McKinnon tackle they would have been hung out to dry by the media and public with no reprieve. He argued with the ref about if it should have been a penalty or not. Immediately after impact McKinnon is on the ground motionless screaming i can't move my arms or legs(you can see this clearly on the footage). You would think at this point Mr Smith would be intelligent enough to realise the seriousness of the issue, and yes he is intelligent. But still tries to approach the ref to argue his point whilst they are treating Alex on the ground. The ref sends him away. Then when Alex gets stretchered off he comes in again to argue if it should be a penalty or not and directly blames Alex for the injury and tackle., again you can hear this clearly on the footage.

Sorry i can't forgive that behaviour and anything else he does that's seems to be from a good place makes me think its all pretend. What a C.

Unfortunately Napa hasn't "gotten" anyone for a while.

Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

Not sure about that Brain. If we are just talking about Rugby League he is up there with the best in all aspects, skill, brains, durability, longevity, toughness and any other word that is pertinent to the attributes of a wonderful RL player on the field. I wouldn't for a second try and say he is anything but the most valuable player to team on the field and on the training paddock i have seen.

I just get so frustrated after the Mckinnon incident particularly how everyone makes him out to be Mother Theresa as well a great leaguie. Just the same way i get sick of hearing about how wonderful the storm are and what a credit they are to themselves for being so good for so long after the salary cap scandals that went on for years and years under the same coach they still have with the same players that are now the senior leadership group. They were stripped of titles because of it and openly this year the celebrate the ten year anniversary of the 2007 GF win(which they were stripped of) publically as a club - basically saying up yours to the NRL. But still they are the darlings of the NRL and the Media. Phuck what am i missing!

His statement to the ref at the time (if he ducks that doesn't happen) was just him being competitive. Typical of the whole scenario down there in Melbourne in fact., Bend the rules (or arms and necks) until they break.

Looking back, they are clearly morally dubious at best, or flat out unethical at worst, in their approach to NRL. Smith is a big part of that IMO.

That said Smith is without doubt the best, most complete player the game has ever seen, and deserves to be recognised as such. They need to come up with a class beyond immortal, just for him.

Flipper Hands I possibly could excuse that as being competitive and caught up in the moment if the only time he did it was at the instant the ref blew the penalty. Which he did do. But he goes at it again after watching Alex screaming motionless for eight minutes whilst they got him on a stretcher. Watching that unfold for eight minutes and then going in to argue a penalty - you got to be kidding - a penalty , not a send off or sin bin but a penalty - you get one of them for a flop, staying to long in the tackle, being offside etc etc. give me a break - don't excuse that shite.

No doubt Smith has been a wonderful player, but ...
I'd add his sneaky hit on Jason Croker's injured knee last year as a poor bit of gamesmanship.
                          Just saying.

Yeah, no risk it was classless to be arguing the point after what had happened on the field. That's what I am saying though, that's who he is, win at all costs.

And as ugly as it might be to say what he did, to a point he was right, it did look like McKinnon ducked into it. The dude clearly has no empathy, it's all numbers to him, probably why he is called "The Accountant". He clearly is no Mother Theresa, 100% with you there.

In 15 years Smith has won 1 premiership (which wasn't particularly spectacular).

QLD and Australia have had no serious competition for more than a decade.

Frankly, I can't really think of any great moments where Smith has done a Hewitt-esque 'CMOOOOON BOYS!!!' and bravely marched his troops hone against the odds.

Smith's era has been one of 'clinical' performances where the better team has won (as expected).

Honestly... my memories of champaign footy are those days when your boys are all buggered, the other team's twice as good on paper, the weather's shyte and one bloke has STILL found a 3rd or 4th tank to bring his team home against the odds. I'd pass the ball to Joey, Freddy, Artie, Fitzy, Mini...etc when down in the trenches like that. But probably not Smith... he'd be too 'clinical' to pull off THE defining moment.
