  • Suggestions for Training over the next 2 weeks

Just my Suggestions for training over the next 2 weeks:-

    - Loose Ball decisions - Pickup / kick / Dive On - (How many times do we have to watch Fergo try to pick up the loose ball and bugger it up ... if he kicks it or falls on it we get a much better result)

    - Defusing the Short Kick Off / Drop Out - our success rate is pathetic, we need to come up with some strategies to defuse these.

    - Dumb Penalties - Improved effort on Friday night but Matterson's stripping penalty just before half time on Friday night was a classic example of when not to give these, Bronco's had just scored and we gifted them field position to possible go to half time 14-12 - have to improve on these.

    - Converting Line Breaks to tries - have no stats on this but we must be right up there in terms of not converting these, again on Friday night Luke Keary's 1st break should have been converted, Matterson was on his left and probably scores.

    - Last play options - terrible again on Friday night

For the record I think we are the only side that can challenge the Storm for this years title but we need to be close to perfect to do that and have not been close so far!

No training. Done enough. Two week bender at Lennox Head will do.

I'm actually amazed with our record in close games this year.

On face value we usually seem to play dumb when protecting a close lead, but have somehow survived.

Don't change a thing. If it ain't broke, don't try fixing it.

Trent does read the threads on the Chookpen daily so once he reads this thread Im sure he will implement what you have suggested.

I think we should treat it as bit of an Origin camp - and one night with a couple of beers is probably a good idea.

We have proven that we don't need to play a full 80 good minutes, we need to make the dozen or so big plays that count. If these are over 10 minutes, so be it. The game has changed. The rest can be an arm wrestle.

They need to play 80 minutes from here on in - haven't done so all year - now is the time

I reckon just train as usual and focus on preparing for the game ahead. We dunno who we are playing so no point in speculating. Focus areas could be:
                    - Skills and decision making under stress/fatigue
                    - Defensive reads when outnumbered, tired and in a tough position
                    - 1-on-1 decision making

IMO our fitness and power is there. We need to sustain it, but taper off come close to gametime. Decision making in defence is what kills us. How do you make the best decision out of a range of dud decisions? For example (with the benefit of hindsight) Fergo shoulda allowed the 40/20 because the alternative was a try. Fergo had ~10 seconds to think about that one and IMO coulda backed out at any second. He shoulda known that there was nobody with him to flick the ball back into (and also, his team mates shoulda known this + backed him up!!!)

It's time for business-style thinking. BATNA and WATNA kinda stuff under pressure and compromised positioning. Get a high quality lawyer/negotiator in to do a speech about quickly weighing up the risks without becoming muddle headed under pressure.

I will be on my own here but I was good with Fergos play.

It took skill and effort and what id want to see from my players. 9 times out of ten one of our guys gets there first. 40/20s are lethal...bronx big chance to score anyway.

All Ferguson needed to do was take 1 very brief look back to realise there was no Chooks player near he or the ball. Let the ball go out for the 40/20 and trust our defence to keep the ShowPonies out. After all, it held for most of the game. Make the Showponies actually earn the points rather than gifting it to them untouched. I hope Ferguson learns from this, but somehow I doubt it.

I'd prefer Ferguson used his skill and effort to stop tries and score them, not provide a try assist for the opposition by coming up with a risky play at a crucial time in the match. He can be thankful to Latrell for saving his blushes.
Supporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.

i notice in a few of the pics from the training gallery that theyve got a couple refs helping out, maybe helping out with discipline? i have noticed this year, like it or not, we've got better at slowing down the ruck and keeping players down, wondering if these refs help give pointers on things like this?

You don't have time to hold a committee meeting...you have to trust your teammates.
