Apparently Anasta had a go at Pearce's Kicking game - all he does is bomb on the 5th

Since fittlers retirement our 5th tackle options have left me salivating, led by these two great clubmen

a double lol would be Bwaiff having a go at latrell for his restarts

        Indeed.

Plus..."when you do bomb, how about kicking the ball high [not just straight to the FB like a lollipop] and have it spin and spiral, then the opposition might drop it, probably about the 'only' way we'll ever get possession down the opposition's end".

In the wrap up after our vs Nth Qld game even M.Ennis questioned Pearce's limited arsenal of kicks. Rather than his predictable 6th tackle bomb he suggested mixing it up like others halves i.e deep, low kicks away from the waiting opposition back 3, & neat kicks for repeat sets. Is something so simple so hard?

Worked in 2013 but we haven't evolved at all.

And that has to be the coach's fault. Pearce is limited, perhaps it's time to try someone else.

                Exactly. Sadly, too predictable.

No one will agree with this comment but when the game was in the balance against the Cowboys for the opening 20 minutes Pearce out kicked Morgan. Outside of a brilliant 40/20 from Morgan we were winning field position on the transitions through our kicking.

It's a sub-conscious thing but for some reason and it may just be nostalgia a lot of fans seem to think a kick that finds the grass is more effective, that simply isn't true.

The importance of Pearce's long kicking game to this team couldn't be any more evident that in the back end of 2015 and start of 2016 when he was absent.

Thurston's kicks find the grass often, especially his little wobbly kick from 40-50m out and follow, so you must be right.

The hanging kick to a receiver on the full is way better when some thought is put into it and made harder to catch than the inch perfect, end over end drop punt Pearce has perfected....

I've commented on this before in length but spiral bombs are in a different category to what we are trying to achieve when putting up a bomb. It's a completely different tactic.

Putting a spiral or floater up is looking for an error, they're an attacking kick. Problem is you have very little control over where it lands so it's a low percentage play in regards to playing territory.

Putting up an end over end bomb is a play for yardage, you have far more control over where it lands but yes it is a very defensive play.

And I think that's the thing that angers most on here, we do play with a very defensive kicking game. We look to create points through our ball playing and apply pressure through our kicking game. If we played with a more attacking kicking game then we would have to compromise on the freedom we play with in attack or risk the possibility of becoming a very loose team. It's all about balance, we play with a lot of freedom ball in hand but do play with a very defensive kicking game.

I didn't say it was less effective, just that it's no more effective when both are implemented correctly.

Yes Thurston has a great attacking kicking game on him but what he does on such a consistent basis is extremely hard. There's very few, not another in the game currently who can do it to such a high level, on such a consistent basis. Maybe Adam Reynolds when he was playing behind one of the most dominant packs the game has seen in the last decade.

Pearce is someone who has to play within his limitations and whilst we can all sit on our couches at home and suggest how easy it is to find the ground the fact that there's very few who can do it to such a high standard currently in the game suggests that it probably isn't so easy after all..

The more consistently effective play (and unfortunately more boring) is to put up an end over end bomb, chase hard and box the opposition in.

After the Storm smash the cowboys tonight with the officials on their side, we'll all be glad we weren't in the GF. Sort of! I think!
