  • Cooper Cronk and his Rooster connection

Seeing that it's the off season I thought i'd share a bit of info on Cooper Cronk for those who'd like to add a little fuel to the current rumour of him joining the Chooks.

Firstly, Cooper's uncles Gary and Steve were both Bronte locals and surfers, Gary Cronk was a particularly well known and respected surfer at Bronte. When Gary passed away approximately 5 years ago the Storm wore black arm bands.

Steve and Gary's other brother was Cooper's Dad (who's name eludes me at the time of writing). Cooper's dad wasn't a Bronte local, more of a Bondi Boy I think, but he was a full on Bondi United man, both a player and clubman. He was also a madly passionate Rooster's fan. An old friend who knows both Cooper's Dad and I said to me the other day "He was as crazy for the Roosters as you are".

But alas, like many others of that generation the changing Sydney city life wasn't for them and Cooper grew up a Queenslander!

So there's a bit of background info.

Now I will add - Three weeks ago a friend of mine who is a high roller bookie told me about Cronk joining the Roosters. I laughed at the idea. He said it was all the talk in gambling circles. I'll admit It is true that the big time punters are always hunting for and often the first to find out the early mail. There's big money in it for them.

Anyway, make of it all what you will.

I have no legitimate inside info on the situation but my gut feeling is that he'll be at the Roosters next year. For 2 years I reckon. Surely he can't retire, he's injury free and playing too well, and the money is way better than any tv gig. He's moving to Sydney, we know that, so if he does play on I can't see any other Sydney club being a better fit. Nick has influence and it's the type of deal that I could see him making. It just reeks of Uncle Nick... And Cronk's got Rooster blood for god sake!

    We'll see I guess?

There is a lot to be said for being a One Club Player. Particularly when you have had all the success Cronk has had with the Storm. I think that will be going through his head and I wouldn't be surprised if he hangs them up and starts his full time Fox career.

I just cannot see how we get him without moving Pearce on. And I doubt they move Pearce.
They can't move keary on for Cronk coz he is a lot more likely to compliment Cronks playing style. Pearce won't. Cronk and Pearce are too similar in regards to being very structured. Just that Cronk does it a lot better.

No way we can fit him in.

Interesting compilation of food for thought, no doubt. And i do like the guy as a player.

But i don't think there is a hope in hell of it happening.
I'll happily run the City To Surf twice covered in my own excrement while disemboweling myself if it happens.

For starters, for the dollars he would command, we'd be getting rid of more than just Pearce. We'd lose Pearce + a back (Latrell probably, who is already making noises for more $$) in order to get him in. The guy is going to command $1 million a season and even that's probably conservative. Some commentators have suggested $1.4M per season. That is massive massive dough to replace a No.7 who already got us a game away from the big dance.

You've got clubs like the Sharks and the Panthers that already have more money in the kitty than us (we are RIGHT ON the cap from all accounts) plus are actively looking for new halves.

Meanwhile, due to his age he'll be more injury prone. He'll start losing pace. We'd lose him for the Origin period.

I can;t see any way it'll happen, unless Uncle Nick has totally lost his marbles.

or Uncle Nick has more marbles in the bag?

For what it's worth, I don't think it will happen either but I hope I am wrong.

I think the Cowboys game was the straw that broke the camels back, as far as Mitch is concerned, his game just hasen't gone to the next level, I like Mitch he tries hard every game, but he just cant pull out that winning move late in a game, when its needed, and his continual kicking straight down the guts of the fullback is deplorable. While it would be a big move, and I cant see it happening, Mitch maybe moved on, or offered a different position, maybe centre, or hooker, anyway, we'll play the waiting game, and see what eventuates, if anything. Enjoy the offseason boys.

Good story BronteRooster. Whether hes interested in our club or not, that's another thing. I hope he is because he's a true professional who's not into making a bad name of himself. Thanks for posting.

              Pearce ------> Tigers
              Cronk -------> Roosters

2 year deal, and a chance for him to train up Lam and Sullivan.

Probably won't happen but I like the idea of it.

I believe we are stuck with Pearce the same way we were stuck with Finch, coach's pet..
Pearce knows it as well as has been proven time and again, irrespective of what he does on or off the field his job will always be safe!!
As a supporter it is a major let down as we can see his limitations and the impact it has on our team..
Unfortunately the Coach chooses to see it differently..

The real question is would Jake like him though?

                  We can't upset Jake.

We can't afford him. And the club has settled on our halves for a while.

I don't think Cronk's motivation is the coin, otherwise he would have already been in discussions with numerous clubs. As far as anyone knows he isn't talking to any club atm.

In this day and age it says alot about a player who is a one club man.

Yes they could. 3rd party deals & Nick has the connections.
They could also sweeten him with a coaching position post footy where he could be paid 1 mil a year.
If the Roosters dead set wanted him they could get him.

I normally agree regarding a one club player.

In saying that imagine him joining a team that just made the preliminary final and is also getting Tedesco.

                          Cronk + Tedesco = Premiership

Imagine the hate if we did sign him, it would be the best !!

Answer is easy, piss off Jake as well.
