  • I'd be surprised if we were trying to keep Earl over Hauraki, Iwi has been bloody solid in the past few weeks.

It might be another case of Vince Mellars, good Jets player who earns his spot through effort rather than sheer talent, and then gets discarded.

I think it's a toss up between Earl and Hauraki. I don't think we should keep them both but I'd probably pick Earl out of the two. I see a lot of talent in him now since he has come back down from first grade. I discarded him after his first grade performances but from what I've seen since, he's been very, very good.

        • I wonder who will be kept from the Jets players?

          Moujalli?

          Deeb?

          Foran?

I was looking at the Jets try-scorers this year...

          Smith Samau - 12 games, 5 tries
          Iwi Hauraki - 13 games, 6 tries ( + 5 games, 1 try in first grade)
          Sonny Tuigamala - 12 games, 8 tries ( + 4 games, 0 tries in first grade)
          Tu'u Maori - 13 games, 4 tries
          Sisa Waqa - 7 games, 3 tries ( + 7 games, 2 tries in first grade)
          Kyle Lodge - 14 games, 4 tries
          Chris Tuatura - 11 games, 4 tries

Hauraki seems the only one worth keeping out of all the outside backs. He might not be as physically imposing as Waqa, or as fast as Tuigamala, but jeez, Hauraki plays with a lot more guts than both of them put together.

          Tough kid!

          • That's because Sonny and Sisa are yawnion rejects - they don't breed them rough and tough like the leaguies do.

That's what worries me about O'Sullivan and his obsession with yawnion players.

I think he is worth keeping...I know he has had shockers in firsts so far..

Pretty sure I saw him play in the Reserve grade GF last year. He went pretty good too.

                  Correct PTB,
Sonny grew up in Western Sydney and played his junior football for St Marys before being signed by the Penrith Panthers. In 2008 Sonny played in Penrith’s Toyota Cup team playing 18 games and scoring 9 tries.

Sonny's ability to find the line was recognised by the Sydney Roosters who signed him for the 2009 season where Sonny made his top grade debut in round 3.

Meh, rugby-code bias aside... I think if you can select the right guys from union then you're sweet, and just giving yourself more recruitment options.

Wally Lewis, Ray Price Ken Thornett, Phil Hawthorn, John Brass, Rex Mossop, Scott Gourlay, Ricky Stuart, Michael O'Connor, Russell Fairfax... wouldn't say any of them were soft... some of the greatest League players ever... yes. Soft stock, no.

I cant think of too many that have come across and been that successful since the early 90s.

May have a bit to do with the fact Yawnions professional now hence they can earn more playing a 2nd rate game. Nick Farr Jones among MANY commentators and ex-Wobblies have made similar statements of late, Yawnions rules are ruining the game.

Dell just recently said Leagues a much better game, Tahus back cos he was sick of catching a cold playing Yawnion. Its only really outside backs that have or can make successful trasitions between the codes now, except maybe Brad Thorn.

Its like how we always hear Pommies from SL could all kill it out here. Mozz has by far been the most successful in the last 20yrs. Ellis looks the goods so far. But in general Yawnion and SL are a level behind League in intensity and impact, especially in defence. Week to week League in Australia is probably the toughest and most challenging game to play, physically and mentally, especially compared to their pay packets.

                      • Good pommies - Ellery Hanley could play, just ask Terry Lamb's fist

A few unions would make it easily, George Smith and Matt Giteau the most obvious - both played lots of league as kids.

Front row and second row - the body shape req'd for union doesn't work for league, and visa-versa

True about good Pommies mate, but CeleryEllery was 20yrs ago now. The thing is they have been very few and far between, the good ones to come here. Since the early 80s the difference in The Poms to Aussies has been very glaring, the intensity of our comp smashes theirs. I believe more could make the trip over and be successful but its a mental question and a big drop in $$$$. You have to really want the challenge IMO.

In theory a few Yawnionits could maybe make it in League. But I doubt mentally with the difference in intensity many would take up the challenge. Again like Pommies, the drop in cash and the challenge is something I doubt few would want to test themselves with.

Just my opinion of course, good discussion points though.

Yeah I like the discussion... can players from different codes/leagues make it?

Poms... League isn't all that hot in England. They've got soccer and union as their biggies... sure a few could probably make it in the NRL, but the question of WHY is a big one.

Union... I'm never gonna win on a Rugby League bored definitely a bunch of Union players who would kill the NRL... playing playing against the All Blacks or Boks right now is a BIG step up from the NRL... the presence of strong international competition makes Union's pace a lot faster

                            - Lote... banned (wasn't 1 of Australia's top 4 wingers at the time, had a poor season with the Tah's and wasn't getting called up with the Wallabies... ARU wanted a reason to get rid of him, and found one)
                            - Sailor... banned (drugs + Clyde Rathbone was replacing him around that time anyway... wasn't a starter)
                            - Tahu... not selected because he was exposed as a sitting duck in defence (couldn't tackle! They just ran through him like a hot knife through butter!)

... Listening to what they think about union is up there with listening to what Paul Keating thinks about John Howard. BORING and self-fulfilling...

All the current Wallabies (bar Benn Robinson or Al Baxter maybe as they're Union-specific props) would make it in the NRL... c'mon, it's only club rugby! They're internationals in a sport that's far more popular internationally...

                            • "Union's pace a lot faster," sirgamble, we don't call the game you love yawnion for nothing as it is as boring to look at as a box of hair and about as fast. Seriously, you make some quite outlandish comments at times. Additionally, comparing Tri-Nations with NRL is quite silly given that the cream of South African and New Zealand men play yawnion but here in Australia many codes compete for the best men - not really a fair comparison.

                              • Rugby is getting more boring by the day. I use to enjoy watching it but nowadays, the tactics just bore the spectator out of this world. On the other hand, rugby league is on the up each and every week and now that we have the finals approaching, sports fanx should be salivating at the games on hand for the final series.
