Guessing Nick knew and ‘agreed’ to it?

From my reading it sounds like he had no knuckle and couldn’t bend the finger so it kept sticking out and getting bent back as a result. His options were to either straighten it by fusing it (and have it broken again constantly) or to have it cut off at the knuckle.

Neither are ideal but I’m guessing that (while disfiguring) this was the more functional of the two options because he doesn’t have this dead finger tip hanging out the whole time.
