  • Roosters sign referee consultant

    From Wide World Of Sport:

    Roosters to sign secret weapon

The Sydney Roosters are poised to make another major signing - this time off the field.

The Roosters are close to appointing sacked whistle-blower Chris James as a refereeing consultant for the After retiring in 2003, Bill Harrigan broke new ground at the Roosters by becoming the game’s first refereeing consultant - and gave the team a vital edge over their rivals.

In recent seasons, Gould has used former Roosters fullback Luke Phillips as a refereeing consultant, and Phillips has played a prominent role in the Panthers’ revival.

Referees boss Tony Archer sacked James - a veteran of over 200 NRL games - without explanation at the end of last season.

James is considering a wrongful dismissal suit against the NRL and his new role at the Roosters will give Trent Robinson’s men a vital edge in games.

James will advise players on refereeing interpretations - and the likes and dislikes of the individual referees who will handle their games each weekend.

We sign the bloke who is suing the NRL as a referee's consultant. What could go wrong?

I dont think it will make any difference.
Every decision comes down to the individuals interpretation. 2 refs have merit but the down side is that it plays f*ck with interpretations. 1 ref will interpret something & its play on where the other ref will interpret the same thing & pull it up or penalise.

Yeah and it makes you wonder how well he knows the current climate if that happened. Not saying he isn’t a quality ref, but does he understand the politics well enough?

Meh I’m guessing it’s less of a ‘how to cheat the rules’ role and more of a ‘here is what you can/cannot do... oh and you should challenge this decision, but not that one’ kinda thing. Seems reasonable that you’d have one expert analysing all this stuff rather than lumping your coach with the job of analysing everything.

Good move. He's working for US, not the refs or the league, and I'm sure he has info which will be helpful.

But it does give us another potential conspiracy theory when we again get caned in the penalties in Rd 1

Dont mind the idea of filling this role but filling it with a guy that just got sacked by the refs boss and suing the NRL has to be a gamble. There's got to be bad blood between this guy, Archer and the NRL and maybe even all or some of the other refs. Surely this isn't a risk worth taking of making us even more hated by this group!

Or possibly the refs are quietly barracking for him, aware the same fate could happen to them.....

So that means we wont win a penalty count this year.
