Orford deal to cost Manly new star Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

    Brent Read | June 06, 2009
    Article from: The Australian

MANLY is closing in on the signature of Matt Orford but his retention is likely to come at the cost of one of the NRL's most promising players, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Orford appears certain to sign a two-year extension with the Sea Eagles next week, heading off overtures from English giants Wigan and Warrington.

However, the club's limited space under the salary cap means it is unlikely to match the dollars on offer from the Sydney Roosters for Waerea-Hargreaves.

Waerea-Hargreaves has been a star for Manly's Toyota Cup side this season and made his first-grade debut against Brisbane last month. However, his performances in the under-20s have alerted rival clubs and the Sydney Roosters have been circling the imposing forward -- a rugby union star -- for weeks.

we need depth in the outside backs, as evidenced by ranga jones running out there every week in the centres.

i guess this indicates we will be punting one of myles or o'meley

The commentators mentioned during the game that Waera Hargreaves signed with us last night. He certainly looks to be huge and looks to be in the same mould as Boyd Cordner. We have also signed Boyd's brother Dane who has come on in the TYC and looks the goods as well.

            This from the Roosters site.

            Roosters sign Waerea-Hargreaves
            Saturday, June 06, 2009

The Sydney Roosters have signed Jarred Waerea-Hargreaves to a 3 year deal commencing 2010.

Waerea-Hargreaves, born in New Zealand, originally moved to Queensland on a golf scholarship before taking up Rugby Union.

In 2008 he played with the Waratahs before taking up Rugby League and signing with the Manly Sea Eagles for the 2009 season.

Jarred has predominantly played Toyota Cup this season, however he made his first grade debut in Round 9 this year.

After being persued by several NRL Clubs, the Roosters are excited to announce the deal and are looking forward to working with Jarred and developing him into a regular first grader.

Just some Warea-Hargreaves stats from NYC:

                2008

18 games (all at prop, backrow or bench), 2 tries, 3 linebreaks, 6 linebreak assists, 3 try assists, 23 offloads, 38 tackle breaks, 15 runs for 127 metres average, 25 tackles average, 13 errors, 15 penalties

                2009 (so far)

9 games, 2 tries, 3 linebreaks, 4 linebreak assists, 2 try assists, 13 offloads, 36 tackle breaks, 15 runs for 123 metres average, 20 tackles average, 9 errors, 10 penalties

Not bad at all. Actually, he isn't really the most impressive of props in the NYC, but he is fairly solid. Most of the better props from last season (Aiden Tolman, Leeson Ah Mau, Russel Packer, Eddy Pettybourne, John Kite, Tim Mannah, John Mannah, Sam McKendry, James Tamou, Tim Grant, Josh McGuire, Martin Kennedy) have been tied up by their clubs on long term, while some like Tohi Leha, Robert Worsely, Stanley Waqa, Mataupu Poching and Tim Robinson are floating around in the NSWRL.

As for the more impressive props this year, Hargreaves has been good, but Trent Merrin, Siosia Vave, Tinirau Arona, Aaron Woods and Jesse Browmich have been slightly more impressive, especially the first 3.

Looks good in a fantastic Manly Under 20's side......we'll see how he goes in a dud Easts side, seemed easily frustrated and dropped the ball a couple of times today.

Our U2Os team are pathetic. There's not much there to get excited about. In fact, there's nothing.

Try on debut and has made some crushing tackles which forced errors, sounds good so far.

Did not look out of place one bit in FG. Looked better then most the players on the park. Going to be a very good buy for the Roosters.

I think next year and year and the year after is when we will start to reap the rewards of signing O'Sulivan.

                              patience....
