  • Roosters hire Ian Schubert as Salary Cap Compliance Manager

lol I'm sure this will go down well around the NRL community.

THE Sydney Roosters have hired the NRL’s most respected salary cap auditor to shut down the constant innuendo about their big-money signings of superstars James Tedesco, Cooper Cronk and Angus Crichton.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Ian Schubert, the man who exposed the Melbourne Storm scandal in 2010, started work at the Roosters on Monday as their salary cap compliance manager.

Cronk, Tedesco and Crichton joined the Roosters on multimillion-dollar contracts, triggering a huge fan backlash on social media and unfounded accusations the glamour club was rorting the cap.

Roosters supremo Nick Politis is fed up with the constant sniping.

LOWDOWN: NRL predicted teams Round 1

HOOKER POWER RANKINGS: ‘How the mighty have fallen’
Ian Schubert will ensure the Roosters are cap compliant.
“We’re actually well under the cap for this season,” Politis told The Daily Telegraph.

‘’Everyone is jealous of the Roosters. This has been going on for 50 years.

“But no-one knows the salary cap better than Schuey. That’s why we hired him. He’s across all of it.

“With any issues he knows who to speak to at the NRL and he’ll make sure we never have any problems.”

Schubert, who worked at the NRL as chief salary cap investigator for more than a decade, has a long association with the Roosters. The former Kangaroos winger played 122 games for the club.

The Roosters have lost Mitchell Pearce, Shaun Kenny Dowell, Michael Gordon, Connor Watson, Aidan Guerra, Jayden Nikorima and Kane Evans from last year’s roster.

Those players freed up more than $2 million of the cap and allowed for the signings of Cronk from Storm and Tedesco from the Wests Tigers.

    'I've still got that hunger'

The Roosters still insist they are around $750,000 under the cap for 2018.

Schubert and coach Trent Robinson will soon decide what do with the cap excess.

A number of players could be prepaid part of their 2019 contract money to soften the pressure of adding the blockbusting Crichton to next year’s salary cap.

The Roosters are in an awkward position with their chief executive Joe Kelly caught up in Manly’s salary cap investigation from his old job as Sea Eagles CEO.

He was issued with a breach notice last month and is fighting to clear his name.

Manly’s recruitment for the upcoming season has been stalled by the NRL’s investigation.

Coach Trent Barrett has been unable to sign a replacement at five-eighth for Blake Green until the NRL hands down a ruling.

"Roosters supremo Nick Politis is fed up with the constant sniping" I appreciate that it pisses of Politis that the club has this reputation. It annoyed me for decades as well, but I don't think having a "salary cap compliance manager" (flux capacitor facilitator) will change the perception of the club by non-Easts fans. We are always going to be perceived as the rich club by the fans of other teams (possibly with the exception of Manly Warringah fans). I have not only learned to accept this false claim, but I would prefer to maintain the status quo. This is because I am pretty sure that every victory is sweeter to an Easts fan. I have learned to love the hate.

It does beg the question though - if you’re under the cap why the need to hire someone to prove it

The media is all over this , especially nein. So if ian Shubert is doing an audit on our 2018 books why is Chrichton included (signed for 2019 unless he is coming early), Thankfully Shubert isnt involved with our club , nor has he ever been so full transparency will prevail.

Well it’s a very clever move......and also a disaster for PR. It’s Nicks show, he should run it how he pleases. Nobody would be game to tell him otherwise anyway
                barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

Taking steps to make sure we are 100% compliant with the cap is a great move, and Schubert is the top man in that field so I really like this move. **** all the whingers crying about us being over the cap, The feeling I am getting with this signing and the appointment of a refs adviser is that we are fully committed to getting the big one this year.

The Roosters have stated all along that they are doing everything above board & have never been done for cap rorting so I dont know why they have hired him. It makes people think they are up to something.

Without doubt a clever move by Uncle Nick in preparation for the announcement of our pre June 30 "major signing".

As if to say, yes we're under the cap and can afford another star player for our 2018 roster.

I like your thinking there Gman. Imagine if we got 3 big signings for 2018. That sounds very similar to 2013 and we all know what happened that year don’t we!

Since when do major signings sign to play half a season?

hell must be close to freezing over, Buzz Rothfield is on NRL360 defending the Roosters regarding the salary cap, and the perception around the NRL we are rorting the cap.

Whilst he is checking the dollars paid on players contracts at the club he can do a bit of moonlighting as one of the attacking coaches as he sure could score a try in his day.
