I dont punt but I wish I did & was successful at it. I reckon it would be mad to put 5k or 10k down on a horse at 12 to one & it wins.
Or going down to the casino & putting plenty down on the blackjack tables & winning or playing big on the texas hold em & winning.
There are professional punters who are loaded & they can afford to lose 100k or 200k sometimes because they know thats all part of the business & they believe in the motto that you have to bet big to win big.

Betting is legal.
Killing and eating chickens is legal...as is keeping chickens in cages.
Some people are against both.
Lotto/Lotteries is gambling.
Horse racing/Melbourne Cup...betting/gambling.

Some years ago the gearbox in our 'commuter' car had gone. In the 'depths of despair', no money to have it fixed ['asset-rich', 'cash-poor']...mrs b-b was lucky to win the hundreds of dollars cost with her $20 one night.
"Discretionary spending"...some people bet, some people buy yachts, new cars, diamond-studded collars for their pets, etc.

Your wife reminds me of my dearly departed mum, who loved a flutter on the pokies. I remember when there were 5c machines and you still pulled the handle and mum had purses filled with 5c squirrelled away. She would only play to her limit and if she won a jackpot she would take it straight out and hotfoot it out of the club with a huge grin on her face. She used to save up most of her winnings and put it towards extra birthday and christmas pressies for her nearest and dearest. She used to get enjoyment from playing the pokes - whereby I get bored after 3 minutes. Dad and I used to argue over who had to keep her company as she played the things!

I agree BB - it is all about personal responsibility. Different strokes for different folks as it were. We all have hobbies that we spend our heard earned on - and it's good for the soul to treat yourself every now and again.

1969 ...a small inner west club...young worker I, 23 going on 15 as we were then compared to the youth of today [ 7 yr olds ringing talk back radio]...I used to visit the club for lunch, roasts etc.
One official told me to try playing the 'machine near the exit door'...5c machine...3 x 5c pieces bought my lunch.
Every 'so often' the machine would pay a drop of 18....not enough to buy a house...but enough to keep me in lunches :-)

Nick just paved the way commercially for other sporting teams and put his own business on our jersey. The thing is, these sponsors don't always appeal to fans such as myself. I wear an old 80's jersey with no sponsor because I'm not a billboard, just a fan of the Red, White and Blue.

Though, that said.. His business acumen and contacts probably saved us during the super league war.

No way I could wear the jerseys of today...they're skin-tight! [so players can't get grabbed and swung around by them, I imagine]...also those old cotton jerseys weighed a ton when wet.

I have only a passing interest in gambling on sport, place the odd bet on games, bought doubles (won two in 46 years - ironically in two consecutive weeks), club raffles at games ( 1 in 46 years).

However I have always had a problem with gambling companies having direct financial associations with any team or sporting code. They should always sit out on the edges.

For me gambling is separated into knowledge based gambling - sport horse racing, politics, etc ( fighting chance of winning some cash) and random chance gambling - pokies ( reality - no chance - the small winnings make there way back to the machines like a homing pigeon eventually).

Both are increasingly developing a stench about them either through the opportunities for match fixing not just results but events in games ie first try scorers through the variety of betting options, etc and around people being had by them particularly the pokies and card machines.
