  • Steve Folkes

I know not Easts related but definitely the low point to start the 2018 season learning of the sudden passing of Steve Folkes.

Shocking news for someone so relatively young and seemingly very fit.

    Sad.

Great career as a player and won a premiership as a coach. He did well.

Yes even though he was a bulldog, I always respected Folkes. I also liked him when he played for the blues. I just got back from Sydney after visiting a family of a friend who was around Folkes age who had passed away from a heart attack. The guy didn't smoke or take drugs and was always conscious of his weight and was slim, yet he had a heart attack and died on the spot. Goes to show that you might be doing all the exercises to keep you looking fit on the outside, but you also have to check the inside from time to time like I did a few years where my system was a OK! I also take an aspirin a week just to keep things flowing...Of course I might need to cross the street later today...Who knows?

He was super fit, perhaps I should give exercise away after what happened to Folkes n Mercer.

          RIP Steve Folkes, a champion....

Very sad. Everyone who claims to know him speaks positively of his influence

taken too soon. RIP to a great servant to the dogs.

                RIP Steve Folkes.

Does anyone remember during his era, when the dogs got caught out using hard-shell, ice hockey shoulder pads, the rules on shoulder pads got changed after that.

Got to know Folkes a little bit. Good man
always kept people guessing. Nobody could work out what he was thinking. Had the best poker face in the game. Players didn’t know where they stood it was quite masterful.

                  RIP.

They used to hit hard back in the day . After Jon Harker busted him, we knew why. The whole team was doing it and he got caught. RIP Folkesy.

Jon Harker is he still alive or did he go down the same path as the hockey pads.

Compare Folkes body size to some of the monsters getting around. That guy was so tough to be able to do what he did. This happens a lot tbh. Fit people collapsing and passing away.

I'm 52 and have pretty much kept the same body shape. I'm 6ft2 and hover between 92kg and 95kg. But I do that through what I eat. I do not exercise at all anymore. For this reason to be honest. If I exercised I will no doubt get fitter, but why put 52 yr old body organs under stress. It's probably ridiculous to think that way and medically speaking I'm probably completely wrong. But I'm sticking with it.

                          It's just horrible news.

Start punching the darts and drinking whisky, dude!

Next door to gran,s beach house lived this little old lady (sweet lady) who ALWAYS had a dart in one hand and a whisky in the other. Her house overlooked a secluded beach and looked like a place from another era inside (apparently she held mad parties back in the 60s... I can imagine them going frigging wild!! Her house was like this awesome 60s beach shack in original condition...etc). Made of asbestos BTW!!!

Amongst the asbestos (painted fibre boards to be fair), durries and whisky she was super fit and loved doing 5km walks down the beach every day until well into her late 90s (along unbeaten tracks that only locals know). Mentally she was all with it and she was this sweet little lady who did no wrong in her life. Lived until ~110 as I understand it... all independently in her own home and simply didn,t wake up one day. Lived the dream!

So seriously fark vigorous exercise and fad diets!!! I swear that the current gen of health buffs will all die of kale overdoses in their 70s. The real secret of life is to do more enjoyable/relaxing exercise, punch a few darts, have a good stiff whisky when needed and enjoy life!!!

Yes and no with the no training bit. I know where you're coming from, but you must remember that these athletes like Folkes and Mercer have been running their organs on full throttle all their lives. Just like an engine, if you drive hard all the time, eventually it will give. Maybe for us normal folk, our organs haven't been thrashed since our young teens like these elite athletes, and have more mileage in them so to speak.

I'm your vintage and have played sports most of my life, but never trained as hard as one should. Now I'm probably fitter than I've ever been and couldn't see myself not doing any form of exercise.
