Deregistered after his sacking from Canberra in mid-2008, Carney was forced to sit out the following season before the NRL cleared his return with the Roosters last year.
Should the Roosters also axe him, the precedent won't necessarily stand because his latest offence does not transgress the NRL's code of conduct.
NRL boss David Gallop last night said he would seek assurances that Carney could manage his life, but did not require a promise to abstain from alcohol.
"We'd need to be convinced that he won't embarrass the game again and the way to do that is to stop making promises he can't keep," Gallop said.
"The NRL has never stopped anyone from having a drink.
"What we've said is they can't misbehave."

So what's the problem?
He didn't misbehave.
He didn't transgress the NRL's code of conduct.
Nor did he in the two weeks before the latest two week club alcohol ban, when he was drinking with Pearce.
Carney is managing his life...all he did was have a few drinks!
...and make promises he can't keep because alcohol numbs his brain and makes all his demons disappear...or maybe he just drinks alcohol for the same reasons as everyone else in society does.
Other players in the NRL who have breached the NRL's code of conduct are likely drinking alcohol now, so why can't Carney if he wants to?
