The current lock is basically a 3rd prop, with a good work rate and size.

Looking at who we currently have, I'd say JWH would be the go.
FPNumb nuts would be the other candidate, but his workrate is terrible, and is too soft at the moment. Like Anasta.
Cordner is more a backrower, hopefully stays injury free.
Cherro is the x-factor, if he ever gets back on the field!

jet's/20's: Lowe, Arona, Goodwin, Cherro, Symonds
This post has plenty of merit. I reckon JWH trimmed down a fair bit in the off season.

If we hadn't had so many injuries I reckon he would have played much more second row/lock.

Atkinson will be our lock going forward. Damaging ball runner and 1 on 1 dominant tackler. Low mistake rate, 105kg plus, can play in middle or edge. Allows others forwards to play wider. Refocus off tries and you'll see what I mean, was NSW 18's lock in 2010.

i like him as well. has had an injury interrupted season and started behind goodwin but with a bit of luck, he could make that position goodwin played so well in this year his own. the fact that he has also played a bit of backs across all codes throughout his career to date also means that he has some good skills. FPN, bosden and atkinson are 3 very good prospects and potential 13s. imo someone with a bit of experience as a short term solution would still be worthwhile for some leadership

Goodwin was a different style of lock, much smaller(80 odd kilos ringing wet), a lot more tackles, but often 2nd and 3rd man in, rarely dominant and often ineffective when defending try line. Atkinson is the size of a front rower with agility, was never behind Goodwin, he can play lock, 2nd row or centre, as he did last week against manly. 27 dominant tackles is always better than 50 plus grabs. Same with Evans and Ehsman, their one on one defensive ability allows 2nd rowers to play wide.

i think that there is value in having a lock that is only 90-100kgs and not much taller than 185 cms ala fensom because they are generally better legs tacklers and a lot more nifty around the ruck which can nicely compliment the hulking props. it does however appear to me that although being 190cm and 100+ kgs, atkinson still has the agility and tackling technique to manage at 13

I'd like to see more of Cordner in first grade but he does remind me a lot of Luke Lewis (who has been very successful at lock), I do agree with you about Goodwin though he would of been my first choice... it is a shame

Not all the locks play like front rowers, nor is it required look at Glenn Stewart & Luke Lewis. There's still a place for the better ball playing locks in the current game.

I do like the idea of JWH at lock, I've been advocating his move into the backrow for a while now, if Anasta wasn't here next year it would be the logical option imo. FPN just doesn't have the stamina or work rate, he seems to still be stuck in between an impact player and a starter... I wonder if his versatility has meant he's never been allowed to settle down and mature. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Still a long way to go imo, he does hit hard though. I reckon he'll play 20's next year maybe get a taste of NSW Cup.
