  • Uncle Nick,Gus and the Cleary boys

Heres the deal.....Nick and Gus have a personal pact about their respective clubs pinching each others players......they aren't going to go to war over Nathan Cleary- its not going to happen. Any player movements between the Panthers and Roosters would have to meet with each others approval. The bond between Politis and Gould is undeniably solid- there will be no " its only business" scenario when it comes to luring players between the 2 clubs.
Any suggestions that Nick would chase Ivan Cleary to lure Nathan is ludicrous. Ivan is closing in on 300 games as a coach and has a win percentage of 48%. He was sacked at Penrith by Gould and despite an unexpected great start this year at the Tigers they too are now showing signs of the wheels starting to fall off. Despite his experience the jury is still well and truly still out on Ivan as a coach.

Robinson is the better coach, imo.
All the Cleary talk is premature at this stage. We have a halfback for next season.

All the Coach Cleary for Robbo talk really had my eyes rolling.

      Robbo is a great coach

Gus had no problem luring Freddy and Matt Sing east side

If there is no way Cleary will stay at Penrith then I would think the pact you speak of would be irrelevant. I think the fact they sacked his father will be a real problem for them in trying ti retain him.

I'm not really sold on the Cleary double deal. Both are very good but I think Robbo is a better coach at this stage or at least similar. Young Nathan is great but a lot could happen between now and the start of the 2020 season in terms of young players coming along.

I think you are close to the mark about an unofficial pact.

But I think JT is also right, I can see Nathan wanting to eventually leave penrith and if that eventuates then its open season and if Gus had a choice then no doubt he would prefer him to come to the roosters where he knows that he will be looked after.

                Not a good example.
Freddy and Sing had no club when they signed with us. Manly were favourites to get Fittlers signature at the time.

Dont know about Robbo... a year or so ago I read him and his family have longing to return to France so it may happen.
I Rate Cleary snr he has always had basket case clubs to coach and done well with them.
Give him a good team he may work wonders. That goes for a lot of coaches.Bellamy is the ace of spades .
The Gould/Politis thing is common knowledge.
You have to ask yourself what do we have as half after Cronk? nothing at all so I say good deal if it comes off.
To be honest lets just say we jag a premiership this year I cant see Cronk staying on.
Latrell -Radley - Crighton -Manu -Possibly Cleary are a big future of this club -...now only if we could get Damian Cook over too..Throw in Tapou and we are set.
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe

I too can see Nathan leaving the foot of the mountains. Father and son have a very close bond as you would expect.
Don't think for a minute that all is forgiven and forgotten about Ivan's sudden dumping by Gus. He's cool and professional like his old man but It's personal and Nathan is dirty about it. As the saying goes, "he who laughs last, laughs the loudest" .

Nathans current contract was signed in 2016 when Anthony Griffen was coach and Ivan had just been punted......so its safe to say both Clearys couldn't have been too dirty about it. It was actually Ivan who talked him into resigning with Penrith and told him that when he turns 21 its up to him where he goes. However Ivan didn't coach in 2016 so maybe if he did have a club the advice he had given Nathan may have been different.
Personally id love to see Nathan at the Roosters in 2020. I don't think theres a club who wouldn't want him. Im just pointing out that Gould and Politis wont go head to head for him. If Nathan decides he wants to leave then Gus wont stand in his way to join any team. However Gus doesnt lose too many he wants to keep.
Im also pointing out that Ivans coaching record isnt flash and nowhere near Trents Robinson coaching record.Personally i got a soft spot for Ivan Cleary mainly because i thought he played terrific for the time he was at the Roosters. As a coach im not so sure of his credentials and i certainly wouldnt sign him just to get Nathan to the Roosters.
However all will be revealed in November when Nathan makes a call on his future

                        I will go this far.

I will be surprised if he is not our half in 2020.

My mail is that DCE wants out of Manly and they are willing to pay half his contract for him to transfer to Bondi in 2020.

I have thought this from the minute Pearce left.

Hopefully you have a similar "mailman" to the one who delivers post at my home, the one who delivers post at my home often nowadays leaves letters in my letterbox that dont even contain the correct street name or correct number of the building on it.
