  • Rating our Juniors/Rookies

Alot of new faces in the first grade team last night came together for a great win. Although I had my doubts during the week, I was confident that no matter how bad we might of been, the Titans would be worse. And that showed with Ash Taylor having another shocker.

Here is my over-view on how the fresher faces have been this year

    1. Mat Ikuvalu
Actually starting to rate this guy. Had a 1-2 errors on his debut but who can blame him, it was his first game. He helps provide strong runs to get us out of our half and quickly gets to the ground so he doesn't get manhandled back. If only we had considered him before Reece Robinson this year, we might of won those extra couple of games.

    2. Paul Mimorovski
Was solid last night and scored a try on debut.

    3. Sean O Sullivan
I can see why he was infront of Lachlan Lam in the pecking order now. Could not complain about anything he did last night, he didn't force his hand. And for a small bloke he had some good defense!

    4. Nat Butcher
I BELIEVE THE HYPE! This guy is seriously getting better in every game. When he first debuted, I heard all the hype about him in the under 20s but I couldnt see any of that from him in first grade. But with the more starting time that he has gotten he has made the most of it with strong runs and is always looking for a cheeky offload. I dont think Aubbo gets a run in spot because of this man once we have our full strength squad back together. Made a couple errors last night due to lack of concentration but I'm sure he will iron that out as he gets more playing time.

    5. Lindsay Collins
Huge lad and a strong runner of the ball, hits hard in defense too! Loved the emotion he showed when Farmer Silly went in for the try. Had me so pumped for the next hit up off the kick off. We wouldnt be any worse if we let go of Napa to be replaced with him in my opinion. 2 blokes with the same build, Napa hits harder in defense but Collins has leg drive rather then dropping like a potato sack as soon as he gets tackled.. With Napa out for the next following weeks we will see more of Lindsay. Needs his mullet back for the extra flair.

    6. Farmer Silly
With so much Chookpen hype around the Silly Farmer (I'm looking at you Eddie :P) I was quite excited to see if the hype was real. I had read on here that he would charge his hit ups with no hand break and that was exactly what he did. Got a try on debut as a gift for his hard running too. If we had him instead of Sitili last week we would of had abit more go forward as I felt Sitili was man handled and wasnt ready yet. Robbo's inclusion of him showed that he agreed.

    7. Victor Radley
This kid is something special and no doubt every club wants him on their team whether they like to admit it or not! When he first debuted at hooker last year and had scored his FOX League Big Hit of the Week with rushing up D and changing the momentum I knew he would be something great.. then he did it again the next game... and again... and again. Now playing his first full year he has been a revelation. I remember the first game I went to this season Chooks v Tigs Rd1. Jake Friend was having a shocker and I was saying to my mate who was a Tigers supporter, "Wait til Victor Radley gets on" and he goes "Who? I've never heard of her" then Victor comes on as hooker and we score off the same set. Fast forward 16 rounds and he's telling me he wished he had Victor in his team. Lol

The season is looking good.. I'm quite confident with how our defense looks and last time we actually fielded a full strength team look what we did in attack.. 32 points on the high flying Panthers. Robbo resting the origin players will do wonders for the team. They will come out firing next week as we prepare for the big rematch against the Saints in 2 weeks. It will be a different result mark my word.

    GO THE ROOSTERS!!

I thought Nat Butcher made too many errors last night. I'm still waiting to see him produce his off load. I think the jury is still out on him being a gun ! But Sean O'Sullivan is our halfback answer. His FIRST game was extraordinary for someone so young and being a first grade initiation. We better hope recruitment manager father Peter O'Sullivan at the Warriors doesn't poach him to be a long term replacement for an ageing Sean Johnson.

I think Nat had a so and so night. Alot of strong runs but yes a couple errors did overshadow them. Keary also threw 1-2 hospital passes so he can cop abit as well..

Sean may be our utility next year

Not sure where I heard it but I don't think he has a good relationship with his old man.

he speaks to his old man, but Peter and Sean’s mum are definitely not only speaking terms

Butcher has played this year mainly error free, so I’ll forgive him for the few he had against the Titans.
              ..it’ll be interesting to see

I think it's an insult to have Radley amongst this list. This bloke is already an established star.

                Great thread.

Bahahah I know what you mean, thats why he was last. I was deciding if I should throw him in or not..
Thought I should of seeing as he only debuted last year

Sorry DBW I cannot agree with you about Butcher or SOS ,I thought Butcher had a very ordinary game and I thought SOS is not nippy enough for a halfback. Overall Butcher has not lived up to the hype he has not had one standout match for us yet in the top grade. On the other hand SOS will most probably improve after he gets over his initial nerves in the top grade.
What a shame that Fergo who was by far our best player and has been all year has been let go.

Please dont remind me about Fergo lol.. Still cut about that.. Almost as cut as I was when RTS left, I think that one hurt more.

I didnt believe the Butcher hype but every game I watch he's looking better and better. I wouldnt say star potential at the moment, but he's really looking solid.

                        On defense of Butcher

How can anyone cover or at best crudely imitate Cordners position

Let alone run those lines or snap ball runners in half defending

Keary expected Butcher to channel Cordner which put pressure on the young man

Totally agree with your summation. if there's a fault in Keary's game, it is the hurried and pushed pass. Couple with Butcher still working on his positional play, it creates errors. Butcher's game reading in defence and his clean up work are very promising and will only get better. Plus he keeps on keeping on. A different player to Cordner and more in the mould of a Corey Parker. At his best he will be the glue that keeps the team together and covers all the gaps. The ideal creative link man.

Butcher needs to start playing like an NRL player, that stupid pass he tried wasn't needed at a crucial stage of the game. Ikuvalu has been impressive and getting better after a nervous start in the NRL.
O'Sullivan has always been the real deal and will only get better.

I’m really excited about the development of Sean O’sullivan,he looks a real talent..

The Club has worked it perfectly with the retirement of Cronk at the end of next year and young Sean to automatically step into his shoes under Cronk’s tutelage..

Watching Sean closely yesterday I see a solid organising halfback who can lead a team around the park really well, with a really good long kicking game and clever short kick near the line..

A nice passer of the ball and a halfback who will eventually take on the line a little more and start asking more questions of the opposition as he develops..

He also held his own in defence bringing down Ryan James close the line at a crucial stage in the match and making some other strong tackles..

I like what I see and hopefully he keeps developing into our future gun halfback!
