  • Salary cap question

I was listening the Furner this morning (not by choice, but I live in Manuka so there's lots of people wanting to listen to him here.)

Long story short, he was asked "since Orford, Tongue and Vidot are leaving, do you have the money for 2 new stars?"

His answer was along the lines of "not necessarily because due to injuries we have had to play a lot of juniors and fringe players. They get bonuses for that in next year's contract and there's still 1 game to go so actually I have no idea what our salary cap will look like."

At the time he was also avoiding naming who his targets were to replace Vidot/Orford/Tongue but he seemed to have a genuine concern that the injuries had forced the club to upgrade the salaries of fringe players (he hammered the point that he'd lost 100k because Campese demanded a big wage, but his replacement this season who will be pissed off to reserve/lower grades will still need a significant salary increase.)

    ---

Couldn't care less about the Raiders, and I hope they are farked, but is there some substance to what he said, and could the Chooks be burned in the same way?

Also Orford is injury prone I know, but would he be a decent replacement for Carney? (Who the Raiders fans on Canberra radio are all convinced is coming home - although Furner said he isn't at all interested.)

You actually want us to sign Orford?? Do you follow the sport? Did you see what happened to him this year?? You must be on the crackpipe again Jism. You are not interested in SBW but you are interested in an ageing player (now retired) who returned from England in the twilight of his career and found he was no longer up to NRL standards. Are you a dunce or something?

It would be ironic if we brought Matt Orford here. It would be karma coming full circle and I expect him to be playing here next year, knowing the knee jerk, moronic decisions that this club has become famous for.

I actually have wondered this, not so much Canberra but Mini was supposedly on a high incentive based contract.

There was a lot of talk around the club about getting a new fullback in but that seem to sort of die when Mini made origin. I just wonder if his origin appearances and his injury free run has bumped him up so high that we need to pay him into next year...

            Sack Carney...then buy Orford.

            Brilliant.
