I think a good way to sum it up:

In 2010, the Dwyer hit on JWH was labelled "hit of the century" but in 2013 it would have been a send off and minimum 6 week suspension.

In 2014 the Slater tackle would have been a brilliant try saver, but in 2018 it's a shoulder charge and 1 week suspension.

For fans it's hard to adjust mentalities, but simple fact is that it's a shoulder charge (with force) and as the rules are written is a suspension.

The brother of James Ackerman, player who died from a shoulder charge in an Intrust cup game in QLD has written a piece on Facebook directed to Greenberg and the judiciary to not allow Slater to play because of his brother. It’s a long story in the Tele. This was the reason why the rule was introduced. That will really put the NRL in a corner now to uphold their rules.

I’m 100% sure it was intentional in order to stop the try- I don’t think it was malicious or he meant to hurt Feki. He didn’t go in with the intent of making a conventional tackle or taking Feki ball and all- he did what he had to do to stop the try.
Now for the life of me if there was ever a penalty try to be given that was it. An intentional illegal tackle to stop a dead set certain try is a good as grabbing a player without possession who would have scored a certain try. I mean Slater wasn’t even sent to the bin?
It took the judiciary 10 minutes to dismiss Latrells appeal because they deemed the charge as obviously correct. If they downgraded Latrell then there would have been a precedent for a more relaxed semi final rules..... but they didn’t and now the heat is really on the judiciary to rule on the tackle and not on the player in question. They got very lucky with Jesse Bromwich not getting charged for the Inglis chicken wing tackle..... can lightning strike twice for the Storm???

THE brother of the late James Ackerman, the footballer tragically killed three years ago as the result of a shoulder charge, has issued a powerful warning to NRL boss Todd Greenberg: “Billy Slater should miss the grand final”.

In heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Andrew Ackerman also hit out at Channel 9 commentators Phil Gould and Andrew Johns, claiming they have “no hearts in their bodies”.

The retiring Melbourne superstar has received some high profile support as to why he should be allowed to play in Sunday night’s decider against the Sydney Roosters.

But Andrew Ackerman was adamant Slater’s tackle on Cronulla’s Sosaia Feki was a shoulder charge.

And he warned Greenberg if Slater was not suspended “there is going to be a lot of unhappy people out there. And every one of my family members like me will be voicing their opinion”.

“Once again, when the shoulder charge comes into play this bloke right here (he pointed to a picture of James) is mentioned,” Andrew said.

“Now he is dead as the result of a shoulder charge.”

He said he was “sick” of his family having to relive the pain.

“I want to swear. I want to scream. I want to break something,” he continued.

“But I am not that type of bloke. I am not a keyboard warrior. I want to get on here, show my face and show my feelings.

“Now Billy Slater should be found guilty. I know there was no malice nor intent to hurt in this tackle. No one was injured. But a shoulder charge was used.”

He said nowhere in the definition of a shoulder charge did it say “that if a player is going to play his last game in a grand final he should be let off”.

“I just want to point out that I have no hate towards Billy Slater or the Melbourne Storm,” he added.

“My hate and my family’s hate is for the shoulder charge, whether it be minimal, medium or very bad.

“So this is a stern warning to the NRL and Todd Greenberg … let’s just hope you make the right decision. Or someone, whoever is on the judiciary, makes the right decision.”

Inthink if Slater try’s to make a conventional tackle he stops the try or at least has the chance to dislodge the ball so I’m happy it wasn’t awarded a penalty try
is it or isn’t it a shoulder charge? It was a a body check imo. They will argue he was trying to wrap his right arm around and that will be enough to get him off the charge.
Id like to see him play, I want to beat them at there best and I bet Robbo and the boys feel the same way

If Slater get off this then ,as I understand it, this case sets a judiciary precedent. With that being the case everyone will be doing this to stop flying and acrobatic wingers without fear of penalty.

The NRL must take this extremely seriously. The consequences could be catastrophic for a flying winger who is off the ground and in no position to brace himself.

The family of the Queensland player who died after a shoulder charge are saying they will voice their concerns if Slater is allowed to play.

I thought things were looking good for Slater (like the Vermin, the Storm seems to have won over Webster to aid their PR campaign), but this latest statement from the family of a shoulder charge victim will be VERY hard to spin away.

Interesting to see Tim Mander, who's now in Qld politics, come out and say that Slater should play. He said, 'Fullbacks have executed that tackle for a hundred years'. Maybe, Tim, but the rules have changed, old son.

Even David Morrow who generally hates us said Slater won’t get off the charge,as the rule has been set!

He said although people are letting emotion creep in due to Slaters last game unfortunately the rule states you can not lead with the shoulder which Slater did..

Just in relation to the part I made bold, I find it interesting that webster is advocating for exoneration of a player who has history in the grubbiness stakes, but didn't afford Latrell the same ahead of his being suspended for the PF. Webster, if you happen to read this, you seem to me to be a hypocrite and being paid by the drizzle to write your "free Billy" articles.

In your most recent article you quote a previous example of a similar tackle which was deemed not illegal. Are there similar tackles which were deemed illegal? Can you state hand on your heart that you have checked to see that that is not the case? If not, might we assume that you want Billy to play in the GF, and are prepared to cherry pick the evidence to help achieve that goal?
