Clover Moore battles to keep premiers making temporary base in contested area
SEPTEMBER 21, 2018
THE NRL champion Sydney Roosters face being banished to an SCG basement if Lord Mayor Clover Moore gets her way in an all-in brawl about a patch of bitumen.
The Roosters are at the centre of a turf war waged by Ms Moore over their plans to move into a state-of-the-art $5 million temporary training facility in a bus carpark hidden away at the Entertainment Quarter.
They must make the move as their HQ at Allianz Stadium is being knocked down and rebuilt at a cost of about $730 million. The Roosters celebrate victory during the presentation ceremony after their grand final defeat of Melbourne Storm last week.
The new training facilities, including a gym, lockers, lounge and theatre, would be paid for by the SCG Trust, which is responsible for the move.
But the Lord Mayor is set against the proposal and is trying to force the issue to a Development Planning Panel, saying the land must be kept for public use.
A senior government planning source said this could delay the move by at least three to six months, throwing the Roosters’ 2019 preparations into chaos.
The Saturday Telegraph can reveal the Lord Mayor is trying to rally support, which would send the team into disarray as it bids to defend the NRL title it secured last week against Melbourne Storm.
In a letter to supporters she decries the “wasteful stadium proposal and misuse of public land” and urges people to copy their submissions to Planning Minister Anthony Roberts and the SCG Trust.
If she is successful the club will have to resort to a plan B proposed by the Trust — moving to an old basement at the SCG before hopefully moving to the hi-tech demountable at a later date.
“Lord Mayor Clover Moore is opposed to the Entertainment Quarter becoming private corporate headquarters for elite sporting groups,” a spokeswoman for Ms Moore said.
“The Entertainment Quarter is public land.”
A statement from the Roosters emphasised their century-long ties to the area. “The Roosters have called the Moore Park precinct home since the first year of rugby league in 1908 — and we are the only club to have played every season of rugby league in Australia,” the statement said.
Ms Moore’s bid to crash-tackle the NRL big boys’ plans has the Chooks in a flap, with a Roosters spokeswoman saying the temporary facility was “vital for our NRL and NRLW teams to prepare for season 2019 and beyond”.
The Roosters have to be out of Allianz Stadium by midway through next month and the spokeswoman said the club needed its move confirmed “as quickly as possible so we can be given the best possible chance to defend our NRL title”.

NSWWonder what she is going to do about this then, the Swans are taking over The Royal Hall of Industries.
We’re excited to share with you one of the most significant achievements for our Club since the re-location to Sydney in 1982.
After a highly competitive tender process, we are proud to announce we have a long-term lease on one of Sydney’s most iconic buildings, the Royal Hall of Industries, located in Driver Ave just a few hundred metres from the SCG.
To be known as the Sydney Swans HQ and Community Centre, it will secure the Club’s long-term future in the SCG-Moore Park precinct – a place we know our members and supporters view as our heartland and spiritual home.
Our new headquarters will be much more than a football club. The facility will become a home base for the Swans community, a meeting place that will allow us to interact and engage with you on a daily basis.
By mid-2020, the heritage building will have been transformed into a state-of-the-art high-performance sport and community facility housing our players, coaches and staff, as well as the QBE Sydney Swans Youth Girls and Youth Boys Academy.
Our Club will then have training and administration facilities at least equal to any AFL team, which will assist us to attract and retain the best players and coaches.
Women’s sport will have equal access and importance. We will finally have the infrastructure to forge ahead with plans for a Sydney Swans AFLW team, something we know is as important to you as it is to us. The NSW Swifts netball team will also have its headquarters and training centre in the building.
At the Swans we pride ourselves on taking a lead in community engagement programs, and the building will be a hub that allows us to strengthen those connections.
The GO Foundation, the indigenous education and mentoring organisation started by Swans’ champions Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin, will have its headquarters in the building and utilise the facilities to expand its programs, as will the Clontarf Foundation.
There will also be a Red Cross Blood Bank, a new café, retail outlet and museum housing Swans memorabilia on site.
We believe the key to our Club’s success is that we care deeply about creating a close connection with our fans and ensuring they have a strong sense of belonging.
Our new headquarters will be a place where we welcome you inside, all our members and fans, in a way that has never been possible before.
The Sydney Swans HQ and Community Centre will have an open foyer that will allow our members insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of the club.
The Plaza directly outside the building will be open to the public every day. It will be the space for a dedicated fan zone, and a vibrant pre- and post-game meeting place for all our supporters.
Next time you are in Driver Avenue, take a look at the Royal Hall of Industries. First opened to great fanfare in 1913, it is one of Sydney’s most loved buildings. Its deep red brickwork and white trimmed windows make it the perfect home for the Sydney Swans community.
We look forward to keeping you updated on progress, and welcoming you to the Sydney Swans HQ and Community Centre in mid-2020.
We invite you to take a look at the plans to take our Club into the future by clicking on this video link.
Yours sincerely,
NSW
