another popped up worded differently to the one I read obviously the first one I read was titled Ponga will not commit past 2019 etc Kalyn Ponga has refused to commit himself to rugby league beyond the 2019 season.

The 20-year-old has previously admitted that rugby union was a future career option for him, one in which he would prefer to represent New Zealand.

He spoke to The Courier-Mail about his intention concerning league and union after 2019.

“I’m not focusing any further than that one, next year,” Ponga said.

Ponga has three years remaining on his contract with the Knights and is coming off a season where he impressed in his Origin debut for Queensland.

Following this, Ponga has set his sights on playing all three games for Queensland in 2019.

“I was gutted when I got hurt after the first game for Queensland — I want to be back in that arena,’’ he told to Courier-Mail.

“I’ll play any position, literally. It’s a goal but not something I’ll focus on too heavily. I’ll focus on doing well at the Knights.”

He has an NRL contract with the Knights that's a 5 year, $3 million deal. In 2017, $600k seemed like a great deal. Now he reckons he's worth more (after an encouraging year with a rubbish club) and is open to signing a Yawnion contract (stating he has ambitions of playing for the All Blacks).

It's just a PR stunt IMO. Fair enough, all NRL players are contractors who have gotta look after their own interests (i.e. cash in when you've got the form/reputation because you're always 1 bad season away from being sacked). However, there is no chance he's leaving the Knights for another NRL club. His assertion is that (for example) if the Crusaders offered him a contract worth $800k a year with a pathway to the All Blacks he'd take it.

IMO by doing this he's made a broader admission that QLD bought him out before his value had been tested in the market, he's now locked into playing for QLD/Australia and that's not necessarily what he wants to do.
