  • SMH raises questions about Roosters US trip and salary cap

This is a non story as other Premiership winning teams (viz. Vermin and Cowboys) have done exactly the same... But sharing this blatant Rooster bashing anyway:

I thought the article was fair and balanced.

The NRL's stance on recognising it as a celebration and not an annual event meaning there is no real advantage over rivals is also sensible.

Dare I say it there seems to be a whole lot of common sense applied.

Nek minute... Roosters fined for cap breach.

It was only a matter of time before we got caught.

we still have the grand final etched in our heads, they can’t take that away.

The scorn for the article wasnt about the NRLs policy on such matters, more the redoubtable Fairfax press for providing the spin that suits their whim....again.

Well perhaps the NRL should raise their age old, paltry $100K Minor Premiership "reward" to $400-$500K as genuine acknowledgement & recognition towards a squad that has worked damn hard & who deserve to enjoy it (whether they go on to win the GF or not).

Half ($10K x 20 players) could go towards the squads planned holiday (or divided up if the majority rules), the remaining half could be reinvested into the football club.

That’s how I saw it too. A subtle smear. “Some fans” are asking questions blah blah.

Why weren’t they asking questions about the Vermin when they were on their drunken tour of the States, getting arrested by local police?

                        > The Sydney Roosters' grand final celebrations in the US were partially bankrolled by Nick Politis and the club and are now expected to be reviewed by the NRL's salary-cap auditors.

                        > Most NRL clubs could only dream of flying the bulk of their squad interstate let alone to Los Angeles and Las Vegas for belated premiership celebrations like the Roosters have.

LOL surely this is satire? Most NRL clubs could only dream of flying the bulk of their squad interstate... I'll remind him of that when those sneaky buggers who run the NRL try making us go to QLD, ACT or VIC to play footy. Every game should be at the SCG!!!

                        > "I would have thought giving a player a $10,000 holiday was a benefit,'' one club official asked.

I'll take that 'question' as a comment.

                        > Under the salary cap rules, the Roosters were within their rights to pay for their players' holiday, provided the arrangements were ''reasonable''.

                        > A precedent was set three years ago when the North Queensland Cowboys funded a Vegas trip for their players after their epic premiership triumph over Brisbane.

Okay so it's standard practice to celebrate after a GF victory and we were just following what everybody else does. Who woulda thunk it?

Might as well just talk NQ up while you're at it... EPIC triumph... 3 Years ago.

                        Summary of article:
                        - Author's angry that we won and then celebrated. He wishes that our celebration costs had to go under the cap as this would potentially sabotage our 2019 season.
                        - Of course the above is clutching at straws, club supremos always chip in for epic celebrations when you win the comp and he even admits it.
                        - He then has a bit of nostalgia about how NQ won 3 years ago and how 'epic' that was.
