Phil Gould death riding us all the time. Unless we are leading by 30, all we hear is Parra are on top here, the Roosters are struggling here blah blah fu*^ing blah, I can feel it blah blah blah. He's wrong 90% of the time. I can't stand listening to his comments.

I posted the same on the game thread as I didn't see your title. But you've got my vote. This has been going on for years now and he really should be barred TV commentary on Roosters games. Just a bitter old man for whatever reason.
Whenever the game is in doubt...there is no dobnt about which way Gus swings. .

But he had “the feels”
seriously though the guy is a joke... he always breaks down a game in a way that makes him seem like he is right regardless of the result. even though he is wrong most of the time...he is a fake guru fk him and fk channel 9... Vossy is so much more bareable.Last edited by IRoosterManI; 03-30-2019, 12:27 AM.My Roosters Channel - youtube.com/IRoostermanI

I don't watch 9 because of Gould and Johns, who tipped Parra to beat us by the way. But Fox is not much better. Ennis was death riding us all the way. I guess we have to understand that most times we go into games as favourites and it's natural for them to lean towards the so called underdog, but it is bloody annoying . We are expected to play well so any mistake is highlighted, but also thee seem to be plenty of commentators, mostly players who have never played for us who make it clear that they want us to lose. Gasnier is another example.

So it's Gus this week...? Rabbs next week or will it be Blocker or Speedy or Anasta or Mr X? Commentators tip a side before the game. They call the game as they see at the time. If Team A is playing better than Team B then commentator will praise Team A. If Team B then starts to play better than Team A then they will now praise Team B and so on and so on...It's a very simple process and they all do it, all around the world. I don't know why people get so worked out about commentators NOT praising their team throughout the whole program...Mind you, other fans ALWAYS feel that Gus & Co kiss Roosters arse in every match. Go figure!

- I think when live he legitimately calls it as he sees it. Watching last night (silently as I was at work until 10:00pm) we looked dead with about 15 to go and Parra were looking good. Then Fergo coughed it up right on the line and BOOM!! We were also down a few players and looked really messy. So... he was right (if what you say is true), we looked pretty shyte and the score doesn't summarise how close the game was.
- He knows his stuff about the rules and the technical aspects of footy. He also knows all the footy celebs so has a fair bit of valid incite into what's going. This is extremely valuable.
- Sometimes he makes controversial comments that the game isn't too happy about... he does have his independence at times. Usually not, but sometimes.
The Bad
- He has certainly done cash for comment in the past. For example think 'pokies' and 'afternoon footy' comments during election years. Channel 9 probably put him up for those comments, but IMO such things demonstrate that no commentator on commercial television just says what they think. There are rules set by broadcasters that you've gotta obey if you wanna keep your job.
- As you said, he retrospectively changes his opinion to make it aound like he was right all along. For example he was the guy calling Peter Mata'utai 'MATTY UTAI!!!' Everybody else was like eeer that's not his name dude and Gus would correct them. Then one day he got the tap on the shoulder and did some rant where he was like 'I dunno why so many people called him Matthew Utai, it's just stupid in this day and age... show some respect!!! [blah blah blah]'.
Overall
- He's an arrogant fark and his opinions aren't necessarily anything more than marketing slugs for various agendas that the broadcaster's paying him to promote. However, hidden beneath all these layers are some valid points about the footy. If I were calling the game last night I certainly wouldn't have been praising our form... he need to improve a lot if we wanna win the comp.

Gus has a good footy brain, no doubt about it, but he's a lazy commentator. Probably he feels that if he plugs other channel 9 programs, he'll be more likely to get his next contract. He wanted to plug - what's the latest piece of crap - 'I want to get on TV so I'll marry someone at first sight'?, where they used 'feels'. Plus he's a gambler, he likes to pick winners and last night he gambled a prediction and hoped he'd get it right.
Still, the only time I listen to the commentary is when the Roosters are playing - just to hear of injury news etc. - otherwise, it's the mute button and some good music.

Typical Gus, typical bitter JoEy, typical death-riding from the jealous. The Roosters were not particularly good for most of that game and still managed to win so I guess that upsets those that don't wear the same glasses that Roosters supporters wear.
Barely a mention of no Cronk, no Collins, players out of position, losing Friend before HT, losing JWH, SST hobbling around, playing with 16 men (Lam got junk minutes). Well done Roosters on managing the win and I feel for you guys having to put up with "Third Man" in the dressing sheds after the game."The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."
