Given that he was basically unwanted (by Smith) I am trying to understand in what capacity he is to return.

I don't think that was the case at all, it was his choice to leave.
Ronnie was planning on leaving before that, he only stayed an extra year to help Fittler

That's not my info on it KB. The word is Smith had his own ideas on trainers & Ron wasn't part of it.
His kids are still in the Sydney area so is only natural he wants to be back down there.
