    Agree 100%

This signing would be up there with Willie Brown.

A lot of Parramatta fans think he's a hooker, and a good one too, but a poor 5/8.

Could everyones perception of mortimer be based on the poor player management and game plan of the past 2 parra coaches?

When i look at parra, i see a team that has relied all their attack on Jarryd hayne, even if the halves are running the show, most plays involve hayne. it seems to have been like a restriction on the eels and their results in 2010 and 2011 have been proof of that.

Mortimer is no immortal (that we know of yet), but like backwards said, he is looking for a shot in the top grade after being dumped by Kearny and replaced by Ben Roberts for 2012 (stupid signing by parra, but hey, thats their problem).

Smith has a knack of turning players around. If he can do that with mortimer...........i have no complaints.

I'm happy to give him a go. My only reservation is what to do with Anasta. The thought of him back in the forwards when we have so many good young backrowers coming through worries me no end.
I think one of the things which has affected Mortimer's game over the past few years is opposition coaches having their players running at him all game and tiring him out with defence. He's only a small guy. Pearce is a strong defensive half though so maybe that will help in that regard. Correct me if I'm wrong but Mortimer is more of a running half than an organising one like Pearce, so they could compliment one another. He should also come cheap which would be a bonus. But as I say my biggest concern is Anasta back to the pack!

If Mortimer improves even slightly under Smith he'll play first grade so Brian can say "look at what I did". And we'll have Braith and his ego back at lock pushing Coydner to the Jets and another bun fight over the 6 jersey ensues. If we do buy him it'll be confirmation 2012 is Anasta's last year.

            Chook.

What a ****en retarded signing that would be, who cares if he is cheap, are we looking for "cheap players" or quality players, we would never ever win a grand final with Mortimer.

Well Mortimer and Pearce have both made it to a grand final..

I really do think he's shit but you never know what could happen... As long as we get him cheap..

The only positive to come out of this is the fact that the Club is looking for a new 5/8th going forward, hopefully Anastas days a no.6 are coming to an end.
I cant handle another year of it!!!!! aarrgggghhhhhhh

we should be staying well clear of Mortimer, waste of salary cap room.

we should take the same approach that the Tigers took with Jacob Miller last year, go round to some of the highest rated NYC players and offer money that their current clubs simply can't match, I know most clubs won't be as kind as Uncle Nick in releasing players with Soward/Miller recent examples, but you never know, at worst it might de-stabilize a few players at other clubs who might be unhappy at being stuck in lower grades with more money/opportunites elsewhere.

Matt Orford has WON a grand final, he'd be cheap as chips at the moment too.....should we sign him?

But he does have the experience that everyone else is craving...

Good signings are about calculated risks IMO
It's a bit like betting... you can't just bet 10 grand on EVERY good horse because you'll go bust. On the other hand you'll never win anything if you bet on some runty disabled horse winning just because it pays well.

Wayne bet on Soward (who wasn't just punted because of Pearce - he was genuinely though to be a rubbish 5/8.) History speaks for itself... with proper backing/training he's the Origin 5/8 and has won a GF. We bet on Carney and NEARLY got a GF out of him... unlucky.

                                I'm prepared to reserve judgement.
It's possible we have half of what the Eels are paying him left under our salary cap, if this is the case we'd be getting him for nothing. Mortimer had a real purple patch when the Eels forwards were dominant, we could use an experienced back up half. I was a little incredulous when I heard we were after him but I''m holding judgement for now.
