I was one of the few Finchy fans while he was at the club. I even have a signed photo of he and I at a corporate event But he definitely had problems back then - I noticed once when I was chatting to him that he had cigarette burns on his arms. When I asked how they happened he just said that he'd been careless when he was drunk but I knew there was much more to it than that, and told him as much. He made light of it, but I knew then he wasn't in a good mindset. I was actually relieved when he left the Chooks, and hoped a new club would bring a new beginning for him.

There are some people in life that are intent on ruining themselves.
they have so much self loathing that they self destruct on a cyclical basis.....regardless of the help they are given.

often it’s a sign of childhood trauma or some really really bad parenting.

i think Finchy seems likeable and doesn’t seem a bloke intent on harming others.
just screwed up.

Im not a hater.in saying that, I could see the signs when he was playing for us years ago. On some days his skill level was under 8s.....as we know now, he probably had been on a 3 day bender.
that was disrespectful to the club and I certainly took exception to that. I truly believe he cost us winning premierships.

I remember you saying circa 03-04 'who moves a premiership winning halfback to hooker'? After listening to his podcast, Wingy seemed to be thinking the same.

You certainly stood up for Finchy which was commendable. But man, you had a thing against Wing.

Was there ever a more villified character on the Wall/Chookpen than Finch? Pearce would come a close silver medal.

continued self destructive behaviours despite many attempts at rehab are a clear sign of this.
you clearly don’t know too much about it.

elite sports people quite often have very demanding and very critical parents.
unless they are hugely naturally gifted...(which Brett isn’t) they have grinded and grafted and worked extremely hard to get to the top.
getting accolades from the outside world but the inner world being in turmoil.

Emptiness and a lack of a purpose post sporting life often exacerbates these feelings.
The high levels of conscientiousness are now without any external rewards.

I am definitely. not a gifted sportsperson , but speaking from personal real life experience to myself it is not always the parents . Please do not think you know what my or anyone else's personal experience are until you have walked in our shoes.

its true...perfect parents(if there is such a thing) can raise troubled kids.

In my experience and I have a bit on this field, elite athletes with mental health issues can have a strong push from the parents to succeed at all costs.

Agree donating parents pushing kids is not good , may be high ratio cause among sporting people but not necessarily in the real world ,

Finchy I remember in a rugby league week article after 2004 said he was soley responsible for the roosters losses..Fair enough . He said it in person too ask JT .

i watched a few games from behind the goalposts in Finchys first year and was really surprised by his choices on 5 and 6 and also his execution...the alarm bells rang early on for me and I posted as such but got hammered early on then the momentum of FOFF took off and I actually felt for sorry for him.

I dont think you would be only " one of the few Finchy fans".

Most Easts fans support whoever wears the jumper. Social media commentators often don't represent the majority, and are only a small percentage of the wider fan base.

I've heard that M.Johns has an exceptional footy brain which im yet to see. .

He certainly didn't show it on that trip to New Zealand with the Sharks. He broke the interchange rule.
