  • Trent wants attacking sides given the benefit of the doubt for forward passes.

"I think they're being really pedantic on forward passes. You've got to be sure. If you're unsure, let the play keep going".

I agree. If there's one thing worse than a missed forward pass, it's a fair pass called forward! (Anyone remember the 2010 GF?!).

The single biggest blight on the game is the forward pass call when it's not. I've been bleating about this for a couple of decades now I think.

Just let them go!!!! Rugby has adopted that stance for years.

I can cop a genuine forward pass getting let go, but not the reverse.

It ruins games. And prevents good attack and often tries.

As long as not CLEARLY thrown forward out of the hands, always play on.

It's not that bloody hard, and never let a touchie rule on it as they always get it wrong.

Here's a good idea Trent how about telling the players to line out deeper, so forward passes don't happen, something kids learn from the under 6's, its not rocket science FFS.

Another blight on the game is that no one seems to know what a knock back is.

There's no such thing as a knock-back anymore mate.

There was a time when the attacking teams did get that advantage. Ironically it was when backlines stood deeper and there was not such an emphasis on playing right to the advantage line every play.

Sure it's a game of inches but sheez...give us fans a break from the robotics. I think that's the reason for the proliferation of forward passes we see, especially from dummy half. And the refs do let a lot of the close ones go, or the game would have too many stoppages.

Sometimes it really doesn't matter either way. When the defence has been hopelessly outclassed and there was no way the try could have been prevented there is the case for benefit of the doubt. Maybe the refs crackdown will have the desired attack of teams standing a little deeper and timing runs better, all of which will produce better attacking footy than the flat line plays anyway.

I think JFC makes a good point in that the breakdown in play over dubious forward passes kills attacking plays that often have the defence bamboozled whether the pass was two metres backward or borderline forward.

In such cases its better just to let play proceed. There'll be countless arguments over teams getting favoured for forward passes. How many of you can remember Manly and Canterbury in the 70's and 80's being the beneficiaries of much doubt and catalysts of controversy across the public bar.

I think most fans are happy for marginally forward passes by their sides to be let go but not necessarily the other way round.
As far as Souths go **** them, their fans don't know the rules and never have. That pass was forward and should have been called such

The NRL 360 mob have just debated this. I'm stunned though what Paul Kent has just said. He highlighted the Warriors "No try" on the weekend and showed where the ball was passed and then where it was caught. This has fk all to do with it!!! It's all about the first trajectory from the hands.

Ffs...what hope have we got when a long term RL journalist gets this fundamental point so wrong.

I called it forward as soon as he threw the pass. I'm still yet to be convinced otherwise, yeah his hand was cocked backwards but the ball doesn't travel backwards at any time. I would be filthy if we lost to a pass like that

At least your reason for thinking it should've been disallowed is fair enough I.e. you believe it was thrown forward. But he used the uneducated (but all too often supported) reason of where thrown/where caught with no regard for physics.

Moreover I reckon that one falls into the Robbo call category....I.e. if it's close enough to be disputed, it's ok.

Who decides how close is close enough? I’m happy if the Hawkeye is as good as in the tennis, tough to dispute.

if we do start allowing forward passes, then I think we go all in for Patrick Mahomes from the chiefs, the kid is an absolute superstar.
