  • Ryles Sacked

Having featured in the club's fairytale run to the grand final last year, the veteran front-rower has been informed by coach Brian Smith he is no longer required despite having one more season remaining on his present deal.

The Daily Telegraph understands the decision to move him on followed a post-season review and his future has been in limbo for the past month.

Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce last night confirmed Ryles would be leaving, but was cagey when asked to provide reasons why.

"Jason and the club have reached an agreement that he won't be with us next season," Noyce said. "A decision has been made, and it has been made by mutual agreement."

Pressed on why that had suddenly happened, Noyce said: "For whatever reason, he's been given permission to talk to other clubs. I'm sure he will find a suitable club to go to."

Roosters sources said last night Ryles was choking up too much of the salary cap, having signed with them last year from French side Catalans.

The club wants to invest in younger forward leaders like Queensland Origin hopeful Martin Kennedy, Mose Masoe and New Zealand international Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, and needs to free up cap money by moving Ryles on.

For his part, Ryles is said to be unhappy about being told he wasn't part of the club's plans so late into the year with the salary cap at rival clubs already full.

Last night, he was being linked to the Dragons - his former club of nine seasons until 2008 - although the Storm have emerged as favourites to secure him.

Ryles met with Storm officials in Melbourne last week, although Craig Bellamy and his coaching staff are presently on a study trip of the US, so negotiations won't continue until next week.

"If he becomes available we will look at him but we're not doing anything until Craig and I get back late next week," Storm football manager Frank Ponissi said via text.

Ryles could not be contacted last night, nor could his manager George Mimis.

Possibly opening up some cap space

      What a joke.

Noyce's half arsed answers show just how much respect he has for us as supporters. We've just released our 2 most experienced forwards and the best we can get from Noyce is the typically rehearsed bullshit.

I can't understand this decision at all, Ryles has been one of our best performers over the past 2 years. Hard to get excited for the 2012 season with continual incompetence like this holding back a promising roster.

        I for one am surprised.

I actually thought Ryles went good for us in many games this year. I guess the coaching staff know more than we do....but that point gets debated here a lot.

Now we really need our young props to stand up and take the week in week out stuff of the nrl.

All jokes aside I feel this is a poor decision.

Ryles was our best prop forward this year. We lose both Myles and Ryles both who average 100m per game, withour recruiting a prop.

We have many backrowers yet let a solid performing prop go?

            All things considered poor decision

Wow. They really are cut-throat. If it means we can keep some of our talented forwards I will reluctantly accept it, but when (not if) those inexperienced youngsters are floundering on the field next year without leadership we'll know why...

Although not knowing all the reasons why you'd think Ryles deserved more respect too. He's done well for this club and tried hard when we were all massive skeptics. What do we do, kick him to the curb. This club is becoming a little soul-less or is that just me?

You're 100% correct, the club is bloody cutthroat. As in they're cutting their own throat.

Ryles should do well at the storm.

Let's be honest, he played about 3 or 4 good games this season. For most part plenty were calling for his head.

We have plenty coming through in Kennedy, Tasi, Masoe, JWH etc.

I don't think it's the end of the world.

Disappointing. I thought we could get another year out of him. Oh well. If it means we can keep a few youngsters then that's great.

His optional third year fee was way to much and he dug his heels in and demanded it. Was not going to negotiate at all and the club made a big decision and cut him. He originally said he would drop his fee but then had a change of heart. Way too much for what he was worth. I love him but I am sure there are things in the pipeline

I hope your last line is right Horry!
I am sick of hearing that we are releasing players to keep our youngsters, surely we have released enough big names to be able to fit our younger guys under the cap?!

If we have some big name signings in the pipeline then i support the Ryles sacking, but if we are freeing money up to keep more young guys it just doesnt make sense.
I am all for keeping our young guys, but releasing Carney,Myles and reducing Anastas contract (hope) must be more than enough to keep them!

Well, there is a HUGE chunk of experience gone...........Are the young blokes mature enough to pick up the slack????

Kennedy, well he has been out for most of last season
JWh, we know the firebrand he can be
Mose, untill he increases his endurance, is like fui fui when he started, Impact.
                              Tasi, Still in nappies
                              Arona, As above

That is a VERY young prop rotation lacking ALOT of experience. While ryles was not the superstar of the team, he was consistent, he came on, did his job and if you like, steadied the ship.............. I hope him leaving will not leave the forwards Rudderless.
