I think Sam has some versatility and could sub in the halves as well. Maybe a bench utility like a Craig Wing?

    • All this stuff about Verrills deserves to play because he got us here blah blah blah....Friend has been a club stalwart for a decade. He deserves to play in a grand final as much as anyone.

Anyway it won’t come down to who deserves what, it’ll just come down to what the coach think will provide the best chance of winning. Trust him to make the right choice, he knows what he’s doing.

As for the future, Friend is turning 30 soon so has maybe 3 more seasons. Verills will be given the choice of hanging around as backup until Friend retires, or leaving.

But how can Friend possibly be match fit?
I think it's too big of a risk.

Apart from a tackle he missed on that little Mongrel Brandon Smith, he really did pretty well in defence tackling the biggest.

          • Sam , Jakes not match fit , no way is it worth the risk unless you have Sam on the bench . Cannot use Rads as backup against Faiders as we need his defence.

You may be right. In my opinion though, match fitness might be a bit overrated for a player of Friend’s experience. He’d be ready I reckon. But if he’s not he won’t play. Robbo will know what to do I’m sure.

              • Name Jake at 9 on Tuesday, but play Sam in GF is my call - let Raiders plan around having Jake there.

Why does he though ? Yes he's Co Captain and yes he's been a stalwart for the past decade but I would want a system where you earn your position on form and Sam has that form it set's up a dangerous precedent that a player owns a position without having to earn it, Jake has only played 5 games this year and in my opinion hasn't earned the right to the position to play in the Grand Final..

Not quite sure what you’re talking about mate. If you have a star player coming back from injury and you think he’s still the best player for the job then you just pick him. All this stuff about who deserves what won’t come into it.

Be a shame for Verrills if he misses out but these things happen.

So to stop Friend’s feelings from being hurt we need to sacrifice a bench spot?

No I just think in such a brutal game having two quality hookers splitting minutes would be an advantage.

JWH, Tauks, Liu, Rads, Angus, Butcher will more than eat up all the available minutes in the middle. JWH will be fresh and could play 60 minutes no worries.

As was mentioned, Robbo played Cords after an 8 week absence in the 2013 GF. So there's no reason to believe he won't slot our 250 gamer captain back into the team.

With JWH back, someone is not going to play much time, JWH has been playing big minutes.

For me, its going to come down to whether Trent is convinced Friendy can contribute a goo 30min, he did say in the presser he was darn close this week. There are clearly massive games being played here though. Either way I don't care, but fun to discuss anyway.

Sadly if he plays I reckonButcher misses out.
