  • Burg-arse summoned to explain his words

Manly will be spewing he is being summoned for next week for some reason and not now - he'll just get a slap on the wrist anyway

Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess will be given the opportunity to express his frustrations about the judiciary process after being summoned to a meeting with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg over his claim the system was a "kangaroo court".

Greenberg phoned Burgess on Wednesday and told him that he would need to explain why his comments should not result in a breach notice but the star forward will also get the chance to put forward his views over the judiciary system during a meeting next week.

The NRL boss recognised Burgess was clearly frustrated after missing last Friday night's opening finals match against Sydney Roosters because a grade-one contrary conduct charge, which would only have been worthy of a fine if not for his judiciary record.

However, Greenberg said Burgess appeared to have questioned the integrity of the judiciary panel and match review committee during an interview with print journalists on Tuesday.

"Everyone seems to be in uproar about this judiciary system,” Burgess said. “Who is making the calls here? Is there a discussion before these calls go out there? I don’t know. What’s the process? It’s like a kangaroo court in there."

Burgess has agreed to meet Greenberg to explain his comments, and he will be joined by the RLPA. The meeting is expected to take place next week.

"On face value, Sam’s comments about the judiciary breach our code of conduct and are offensive to both the chairman and members of the panel who carry out their duties impartially, without fear or favour," Greenberg said.

"We take a pragmatic view about most of the debate that occurs around the game. However, the NRL judiciary is a longstanding and independent process based on the principles of natural justice in our court system.
"Our chair is an esteemed Judge of the highest calibre and our panel members are former high-profile players who are independent from clubs.

"The integrity of the system and the people in it should never be questioned."

Burgess also called for a discussion between NRL management and senior players about the judiciary system and believes low grade offences should be liable to fines rather than suspensions, saying: "It is better than senior players missing big games that we have played nine months for".

An NRL statement said the RLPA had been notified of the action and invited to attend the meeting. A decision about whether a breach notice will be issued will be determined after the meeting.

Greenberg said all players had the opportunity to discuss issues about the game privately with the NRL at any point and it understood that he told Burgess that.

"I’ve spoken to Sam today and invited him to meet face to face to discuss the issues he has and explain his comments," Greenberg said.

Burgess has been named as captain in the second row to face Manly at ANZ Stadium in Friday night.

Yeah I was gonna say... not a great move calling the judiciary a kangaroo court (particularly a pom doing so - one could argue he's made deeper comments by saying so).

I almost wanna stand up for him as he was defending JWH and this has brought the issue of suspensions for such minor infringements into the spotlight.

IMO a fine only offence should always be a fine only offence. For example if you've just been released from prison for robbing a bank when you get caught for fare evasion on a bus, you won't be sent back to prison for another 3 years on the basis that you're a bank robber. Rather, you'll be issued with your infringement notice and you'll move on.

Tripping? I'm not gonna go into whether or not JWH REALLY tripped Jimmy the Joke or whether Robbo shoulda hooked him for the last 10 (because like Cords, he wasn't needed). But like seriously... essentially 2 weeks for tripping a guy over? (He's now on 90 points). It's stupid. The offence is so minor! It meant nothing in the context of the game and if it had meant something, I reckon a free kick woulda been an adequate penalty (no fine, no suspension...etc).

On the night, none of the remaining Souffs fans noticed it or complained about it. It still boggles my mind that JWH has been suspended. Again, the blessing in disguise is that if we make the GF, he's definitely in and injury free.

"The integrity of the system and the people in it should never be questioned." - Todd Greenberg.

It's that sort of head in the sand attitude that allows corruption to breed. The integrity of the system and the people in it should always be under review, in my opinion. To be clear, I am not saying that they are corrupt, just that if no attention is paid to those matters, the circumstances exist in which a human being could be corrupted. I suspect that he is meaning to defend the integrity of the system and the people in it and that's fair enough, but if that's what he means that's what he should say. There is a hint of trying to shut down the discussion and that's what worries me.

Am I right in saying it was Souffs that reported and complained about JWH ?

Yes they did...it was a nothing incident that didn’t hurt anyone nor it was meant to attack the jet and those arseholes had a whinge. It’s obvious that they don’t go by the adage that whatever happens on the field stays on the field. They got smacked back to Redfern and had a big cry.

As for Burgess coming out with this whinge, oh please cry me a river. He’s not out there trying to fight Jared’s battle... he’s just whinging for himself and his clan.

Gives us all a big insight into the character of Slob Richo and the Burgesses. They don't take responsibility and man up, Sam doesnt have to with all the arse kissers around him.. its all just pass the blame on.. to the refs, the NRL, to us, women they cheat with, their wife fault etc. Sam having a whinge STILL, how dare i be held to any account.... that sums up the guy... the same entitled attitude you see it in their fans.

If the club culture was any good it would be instilled in them that I'm not doing that, I'm not into grievances or seeking out some sort of revenge a year later like a hair pull or filing a trip complaint after getting walloped by the better team. Nutjobs.

Why do the NRL and most of the media want players suspended? Shouldn’t the objective be to have the best players play, particularly at finals time? Suspensions should be the last resort rather than the default. Burgess is 100% correct. Greenberg has no idea. Under his leadership we’ll end up with with even emptier stadiums and falling tv ratings. #imwithsam

What leadership? Greenberg threatened Burgess with a fine and law suit if he doesn't publicly apologise.

Burgess just said what so many NRL fans (the people who pay both their wages) have been saying all year.

And Greenberg's response is not to join into the legitimate discussion frustrating so many of his key stakeholders but instead try to control the discussion by gagging anyone who he legally can so he doesn't even have to enter the discussion. His authoritarian take on 'leadership' is outdated and ineffective.
