  • Worst justifications to sign a footballer

Reading through posts here and on the wall relating to the signing of Daniel Mortimer got me thinking what lines you see trotted out that make you realize you are probably signing nothing more than a crap footballer.. to paraphrase some i have read re; Mortimer..

He will be good off the field and with the media
He has a point to prove
    Always tries his best

Add some more of these classic cliche's to the list....

Good depth...means in reality he's a reserve grader.

He has something to prove like Carney did in 2010, he will be a great player and will prove alot of haters wrong. Remember my words..

Another club is paying part of his salary. That is code for..another club couldn't wait to get rid of him because he can't play.

Although I like the signing simply because it appears we've finally realised Anasta at six isn't the answer, it is an indictment of where this club has gotten to considering we now sign rejects and reserve graders because they don't get in the papers.

"A change of scenery will do him the world of good"

"Became stale and needed a new challenge"

Note that I don't believe these apply to Mortimer but do apply do a lot of our dud signings.

"He never really settled in......he just needs to be in a different environment" OR

"Another coach will get the best out of him" OR

"Unfortunately he didn't really suit our style of play, but he's a quality player".

Fair point however i wouldn't be reading too much into what the masses say. The masses also thought O'Meley was a great signing and SKD was useless prior to 2010 etc etc .

Nothing wrong with him that a change in job wouldn't fix

hahaha but I generalise - I am going to look on the bright side (as the season has yet to begin) and predict that he will be good off the died AND on it and that he DOES have a point to prove and that he always tries his best lol also predict he won't be the worst on our side

He would have been cheap and can play, unfortunately coached by a bloke who is rubbish Steve " I blame everything on Danial Anderson" Kearne

                            "Footy is a confidence game".

Had the confidence 'beaten' out of him?

A nice new friendly home, ...mentored by new and different style coaches and the 'high-performance' unit, who knows what will be.

In reality, gotta make one's own stars these days.

I remember way back in 2001 we signed a bloke who was similarly maligned and unwanted by Parramatta, they didn't rate him as a first grader. In 2002 Jayson Cayless became a premiership winner with the Roosters and a New Zealand international. Just goes to show Parramatta aren't the best judges of who to keep and who to get rid of.......

I am prepared to give him a chance and see how he goes.
