Like just about every other Easts supporter I was hugely impressed with Friendy this year. Especially, in fact, with the way his attack improved in the latter part of the season. And I think his dummy-half play will just keep on getting better and better.

As far as the tackling stats are concerned. No surprise. He's always been a huge worker in D. Regarding 1-on-1 tackles though--that's not a stat that's particularly meaningful, or necessarily positive. Yes it's important for a player to be able to tackle effectively one-on-one when isolated or doing mop up work. Indiscriminate 1-on-1 tackles can be a negative though. Not having multiple players in a tackle just gifts the opposition fast play-the-balls in the modern game.

1 on 1 tackles are mostly made in cover defense, how is this negative?

Jake Friend wins Jack Gibson Medal
                  16/09/2011 11:03:47 AM
Young Roosters hooker Jake Friend has taken out the club’s highest individual honour, The Jack Gibson Medal.

In a memorable night for the 21 year old, Friend also picked up the Members Player of the Year award after appearing in all 24 games for the Tricolours this season.

An emotional Friend thanked everyone who has supported him throughout his career when accepting the award.

“I am really grateful for all the support I have received since I joined this great club,” he said.

“I absolutely love this place and I never want to leave.”

It's not a negative in that regard and I did mention that. I was commenting on the fact that it's a problematic stat because it can include a number of scenarios. Some teams do have more 1-on-1 tackles on their sheets, not only because of covering tackles, but because their defence isn't always working as a team. This has nothing particularly to do with Jake btw, I just thought I'd comment on the use of that stat, because I've seen it quoted before among fans for various players without any sense of context.

I understand where your coming from but not many 1 on 1 tackles happen in the general run of play these days, Its all about ruck domination and slowing the play the ball. I can't remember the last time i witnessed a 1 on 1 tackle in the middle of the field!
