Massive immigration is quite another.

Geez this thread has turned into a political debate....i just want to know when the freakin SFS is being built- and it better be everything that was promised.

But i'll add something into the little debate between Bondi Boy & Paddo Colt.....not that anyone particularly cares what i think.

The ALP want to lift immigration because they are of the belief that it will stimulate economic growth. Unfortunately economic growth doesn't lead higher wages and thus better living conditions for all - the last 20 has seen the gap between the wealthy and poor increase....year after year it gets bigger and bigger. The economy can never catch up with the required standard of living when we have a overflow of immigrants coming in- the figures don't lie. Flooding the country with immigrants doesn't bring with it wealth like it did after WW2 and the era of Gough Whitlam. Australia needed hands back then-but when that demand is gone it has a negative effect.

The Libs would like immigration to increase too....because the more people who are here the lower the wagers- and thats what the financial backers of the Libs want. However to appease the red neck voters and keep with loose party policy the provide a token decrease in immigration. Do they really care about illegal immigrants? Only if they come by boat and they can turn it into a political debate. If they really cared they could walk into any of those massive Asian nail salons and say " Ok we need everyones ID and papers if need be".....and it will be like a cat amongst pigeons. I mean every 3rd mansion in Vaucluse has an illegal immigrant live in maid or two. No the Libs don't really care about policing illegal immigrants or limiting immigration- quite the opposite in fact.

So you see no matter which side of politics you sit your always going to be part of the same hypocrisy. Its how the system was set up- no matter which road you go down the destination is always the same! Midnight Oil were on the ball 40 years ago.... " the rich getting richer, the poor get the picture". Nothing has changed, its just got worse!

I'd love it if they made the stadium smaller. 20 000 would be perfect, but even 30 000 would be great. Sure, would be bad for us on Anzac Day and for semis but for the rest of the year, it would create the kind of atmosphere that you can't get at a half full 40 000+ stadium. Might also raise our attendances - if you make something scarce people value it more.

Well thats an interesting point. My old man came to Australia from Italy as a 16 year old after WW2 as a teenager and not knowing a word of english, nor did he know anyone here. There were no jobs in Italy and if they wanted work they were told either Australia or USA had lots of job opportunities. When he arrived he got work after 3 days, lived in a tin shed with no ammenities for 3 years and spent most half of his weekly wage for 6 months paying someone to teach him english. There were no government handouts back then. He didn't complain, he wrote a letter to his brother in Italy saying he landed in the best country in the world....and his brother was on the next ship over.

My old man is now in aged care in his 90s but he is still with it enough to get pissed off hard about todays ( im thinking hard to remain politically correct) immigrants who are non contributors to our economy. I wont go further into his views but he is scathing of the government for how they have handled immigration and welfare. He rightly points out that if Australia had no job prospects in the late 40s,50s,60s & 70s there would not be 1 person of Italian ancestry living in Australia today ( that means no Mini or Teddy!) . He thinks of the last 30 years of immigrants, a large portion (not all) has taken advantage of what Australia has to offer without paying their dues.

If anyone is offended by any of that well i guess you would have had to live in his shoes to understand.

RR I have to say your I have a huge amount of respect for your father's generation and they lived through a tough period of history and still made a success of their lives and laid a great foundation for their families.

I often find with this generation the level of self-reliance and resilience is something to be admired.

The positive influence the Italian migrants had on Australia is there to see and they have certainly enriched our country's culture. As you rightly point out we might have been a bit short on quality fullbacks in recent times if they didn't turn up.

I was prepared to discontinue my engagement with Bondi Boy since his responses are entirely fact free ranting (of the Alan Jones type – non sequiturs is what such responses are called in debating) not worth the effort or the breath employed to express them. My initial beef with BB, since lost in a fog of non sequiturs, concerned his boosting of the Liberal Government and conflating that with the “new” stadium. The enormous cock up with the Light Rail project gives the lie to the Lib boosting that he went in for at the time and that alone should dampen any optimism about the replacement SFS happening any time soon.

Franking credits was something brought in by Keating and the Labor party- it was very fairly done. I'll explain in its simplest term. Before Keatings reform a company would pay tax on any dividends it paid out to shareholders. Then shareholders would have to pay tax on what they received. Keating changed the set up by(essentially) making it so the shareholders receiving the dividend did not to have to pay the tax a second time- PROVIDING you paid tax during that financial year (eg you had a job and were paying tax). It's a way of rewarding those who make a contribution to the economy. Then came John Howard who basically abused the system and made it that even if you didn't pay any tax at all- you would still get a tax credit- which means the government would send you a cheque- totally absurd. It was a free meal ticket to those who were already obese.

Economic growth- its shoved down out throat that we need it to support the ageing population- that economic growth is such a great positive thing......and it would be if wages increased accordingly! However since wages haven't for so long all its done is make the divide between rich and the poor greater. What we need is a greater standard of living for all.....and giving the benefits to the top end and saying the wealth will trickle down to the bottom end is the biggest crock of shit you'll ever hear. It never has worked in any country and never will.

So whens me farkin SFS going to be built by? Thats all i want to know!!!

I seriously doubt that lessons have or will be learned Axe. Newscorp doesn't publish (or at least give prominence to anything embarrassing to the Libs so things will go on pretty much the same. A bit like you're doing, they want to sweep it all under a rug but this Light Rail thing is a complete debacle - one billion overrun because no due diligence was done and the Libs misled the contractors. That's one billion of ordinary people's tax contributions - the rich and Corporations won't pay tax and haven't for years. Since O'Farrell's inglorious time the Libs have run surpluses on the back of real estate stamp duty receipts which are largely the contribution of young people who have saved for house deposits. I don't know what the future is with regard to the "new" stadium, what is the bridge to nowhere across Anzac Parade all about? The way that the big end of town operate we could see a Rugby theme park. Has anyone sighted a plan for the whole precinct? What bugs me is that BB, your good self and Jack's FC are inclined to imply that this mob are good managers - they aren't and a cursory google search will put that myth to bed.
