Something doesn't add up.
We have lost Cronk and Tets and we bought Flanno and upgraded Manu, SST and JWH. I actually doubt JWH got an upgrade but just an extension based on his age and judiciary record.
We also have Morris, Maubs and possibly Hall gone after next year and no guarantee that Butcher and Friend will be offered new contracts although likely.
But we have no money left for Trell.
We must have a big signing locked up for 2021 if we don't have any money left for Trell.

Maybe the club simply has a very high opinion of Billy Smith. He might not be Latrell, I mean who is, but maybe he'll hit the scene at 100mph and we won't need to find a centre replacement.

As for where the money has gone, Manu will have received a huge upgrade. As will have SST. Also Nat Butcher and Sam Verrills will need sizeable upgrades, too. Sitili wouldn't have come cheap either. All these players were recruited at a fairly young age and are good enough to take us forward without having to rely on recruiting more star players, which is always more expensive.

The great success of this Roosters team has always been finding the talent and developing within, whilst recruiting generational talents like Teddy, Cronk, SBW and Keary as the cherry on top. And whilst Teddy and Keary are here and in their prime I don't think we need anymore superstars to compete; hence all the money has gone to retention.

IMO too much upgrading. I doubt Manu and SST are currently earning peanuts. Butcher meh. Verrills no doubt a big upgrade based on ability, but that also probably means we won't be re-signing a 31yo Friend in 2021.

Why would losing a centre be the start of it all going pear shaped?

Agree, Cronk himself admits he wasn’t as talented as those around him but achieved his success through sheer hard work and nothing else

It was more an meh on the monetary side. We let Matterson go and earn $350k at the Tigers. I doubt any upgrade that Butcher is getting will break our salary cap.

Conspiracy but maybe this was all a ruse to make sure Souffs didn't get their hands on SST and JWH? Thinking:
- We knew they were gonna get one of them.
- JWH and SST were both golden boot contenders and their form deserved a raise. Say what you like about Latrell... those 2 laid the platform for all our key victories this season. Souffs and the Raiders (even teams like NQ) have intimidating packs and no matter how good a centre is, they're farked if our forwards get dominated... we need these guys to protect us from the likes of Papalii and Taumalolo rampaging down the middle for 250+ metres).
