Old man rooster I have read your many.posts and think on.most occasions you have a valid point or at least a bloody humorous one but bondicar make a valid point, if people are to respect the welcome.to country, which some find divisive, not me , some , them maybe the others should respect the anthem , which I detest with silence with out previously making pubkic comment that they won't be singing it, better to just not sing if you don't want to, old saying is good for the goose and good for th gander , no disrespect intended to you or anyone else

I read the unedited comments on the NRL website and Latrell didn't really say he was dropped because of racism. He said NSW went funny on him because of not singing the anthem but that he's 'not going to call people racist when they're not', and a few other things. The 'Latrell's explosive Origin anthem allegations' was a bit of journalistic hyperbole.

I've got no doubt Freddy isn't racist, but it's possible the not singing the anthem was an issue. After all, L's the best centre in the game and being dropped after one bad performance was controversial (even if Freddy was vindicated by a series win).

Put it this way if L had sung the anthem in full voice and announced that he did it not because he likes the anthem, but because he loves the Blues, would he have been dropped?

Latrell wasn't dropped for playing a poor game.

He was dropped for not giving 100%; which Freddy understandably viewed as inexcusable given the culture he is trying to build with the young Blues squad.

With the likes of Tommy Turbo, Wighton, and young Staggs and Xerri vying for centre spots going forward, Latrell needs to understand that talent alone won't be enough - he also needs to give 100% effort.

Which he absolutely didn't do in Game I. He was jogging back on some plays.

And so he was quite justifiably dropped.

There was some tape shown by the media after the game which showed half a dozen incidents where L didn't put in. Half of them were fair criticisms, half of them weren't. L has never been a hard working type of player and you could probably have found half a dozen incidents in his motm performance v Tigers when he didn't put in 100%.

Freddy has the right to pick who he wants (and was vindicated on this occasion by a series win) but dropping Latrell wasn't clear cut. A lot of pundits were surprised by the decision.

“They never picked me for origin because of my skin colour” - Mundine, who wasn’t good enough to play origin.

“They booed me because of my skin colour” - Goodes, who was booed because he was an opposition player.

“They dropped me because of my skin colour” - Mitchell, who was dropped for two poor performances.

One certainty to come out of all of this is that the Transit Lounge is no more. What a decisive managerial display this is - enormous and so low key, emotionless and gentlemanly on the management side! One of the best players in the game rejected summarily. We've entertained some behavioral shockers in the past - Hage from the Bulldogs in the 70s who didn't play a game. Bobby Goulding from GB likewise, Jacin Sinclair (now deceased) to name just a few who come to mind. "Pour encourager les autres" it was called in the Great War. No fuss - bang!

                      Maybe, but -

'Let's drive them off their land, kill then when necessary and classify them as fauna because of their skin colour'. You can kind of see why they're suspicious.

Firstly, the weren’t killed because of their skin colour - what a ridiculous conclusion to draw. They were killed at the time because the settlers saw it as an opportunity to claim land over an inferior group (in terms of weaponry and resources). They could’ve been black, white, yellow, red or bloody purple, they were going to be invaded.

Secondly, for how long are a select few going to continue playing the victim card? Whitlam returned the land to Mabo (I think), Rudd apologised on behalf of the Australian people, and we’ve introduced a “Welcome to Country” speech just to name a few things.

                        • I think Latrell was sacked because of his attitude. He wasn't fully committed to the team to the level the coach demanded. He wasn't prepared to put his body on the line for his team mates and for the team. His mind was distracted by many things - a death in the family, a criminal issue with his brother and his fight with his old manager. Fittler (and puppeteer Gould) felt these distraction were affecting his full 100% commitment to the team. He seemed to be able to shake off these distractions in order to push his anthem beliefs, which he was fully entitled to do IMHO. However, at the same time, he wasn't able to shake off the distractions when it came to training and playing state of origin football 100% switched on. From a coaching point of view this would have been frustrating.

Do we pressure non-Indigenous Australians to join the Welcome to Country ceremony? No, its fine to be respectful and silent. Can't that go both ways?

                            • I am actually confused as to why anyone would be offended to the welcome to country ceremony.
