  • Best wishes to all Chookies fans/players/staff...etc in the fires

I just drove the family from Canberra to Sydney to escape the smoke. Our beach house down the south coast (grandpa built it in the 50's) will likely burn tonight unless there's a miracle (despite its abundance of asbestos - most of the area's gone however it's right on the end of the headland and we bought the land because it was a long, grassy/rocky headland... it's a family jewel, 3 generations of us have grown up with that as our holiday home and I've stored all my abducted daughter's belongings/craft there for safekeeping). We're lucky as our lives aren't at risk, it's insured and we've got the cash to rebuild regardless (also, most of my memories are scanned/photographed and stored on multiple offshore backup solutions).

That said, fires seem to be pretty much everywhere. I wish everybody the best, but particularly the roosters community. Don't really have any advice (like me, maybe you can share your stories here...etc). Feeling for everybody impacted and very grateful for those volunteering their time for this.

Best wishes to all, hope it buckets down in all the right places soon and may 2020 be a good one!

Here's hoping they get an easterly, you don't want to lose that house.

Also, R1908, hope your daughter's alright.

Yes, I too am very sorry to learn of those circumstances ism and R1908. I wish you both well and hope the news is okay.

All the best to the RFS personnel and all of the volunteers during this trying time. Worst in the state's history apparently.

I sincerely hope that 2020 is a better year in a number of respects.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

As shit as it is to lose your possessions, it’s the people that are most sacred. It will only reinforce how immaterial life is

Like the players who lose their grand final rings, it doesn’t take away the memories.

                    Cheers!

The fire maps suggest that it took out most of the area but missed our little point somehow. Shortly after the area had some rain. While the fire is still uncontrolled, I suspect it would have a difficult time getting back there as it'd have to go through areas it has already burned. Feeling very fortunate for now...

Ism22 sorry to hear how the fire is impacting on you. Please take care if your asbestos elements of your house do get impacted by fire as they become friable and substantially more dangerous at that point to your family’s health.

Wishing you some good luck and hopefully you come out okay.

Yesterday we had our fourth session of fighting fires on our property starting last Friday where we were helping out our 84 year old neighbour save his house.

One day saw a 24 hour session to put out fires overnight.
What I’m seeing from the south coast is horrendous. Seeing young people being killed whilst serving with the RFS is devastating. As is the folk who have died trying to defend their properties.

The thing that has impressed me the most is people in small communities is they will really band together on the whole to support each other both in responding to the fire as well as looking after each other afterwards.

I hope we can see an end to the current fires soon. Hop everyone else is good and safe.

We had to evacuate from our property near Tumbarumba early yesterday morning. We are waiting to hear if our place survived, though like the OP the map suggests it just missed us by a few kms.

I hope Tumut Chook is OK.
