FWIW the house ended up burning down. Really sad but as somebody said, the memories will live on.
Further, the island + beach that you look out onto from our front yard is a traditional fishing spot for the traditional owners of 'our' land. I imagine they woulda lived on the same land for thousands of land until some white dudes came in with guns and rounded them off it while stealing their children, so I can't feel too sorry for myself.
It's all insured. Dunno what's next really but rates in the area are now ~$8000 a quarter because people now pay many millions of dollars for these blocks. We won't be able to afford to keep this as a holiday home forever regardless. It's tempting to investigate how we can give it up to a local indigenous group on a deal where they get a significant discount on rates. Dunno if they'd want it but I reckon it'd be pretty cool if instead of being bought up by some millionaire and turned into a largely unused McMansion, this land could be a little more special to somebody.
